Dharan is a sub-metropolitan city in Sunsari District of Koshi Province, Nepal, which was established as a fourth municipality in the Kingdom in 1958. It is the third most populous city in Eastern Nepal after Biratnagar and Itahari. The Nepali word "dharan" means a saw pit. The rainforest from which the tree trunks came is still just on the edge of the city. Much later the British Gurkha camp opened in October 1960. The use of the camp by British Gurkhas finished in the mid 1990s. Dharan has an estimated city population of 173,096 living in 34,834 households as per the 2021 Nepal census. It is one of the cities of the Greater Birat Development Area which incorporates the cities of Biratnagar-Itahari-Gothgau-Biratchowk-Dharan primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal, with an estimated total urban agglomerated population of 804,300 people living in 159,332 households. It is the largest city in the province number one by Area. It covers 192.32 square kilometers while Biratnagar and Itahari is 2nd and 3rd biggest cities by Area
Sunsari District is one of 14 districts in Koshi province of Nepal. The district is located in the eastern part of the Outer Terai and covers an area of 1,257 km2 (485 sq mi). According to the 2011 Nepal census, the population was 753,328. The district headquarters is located in Inaruwa.

Itahari is a sub-metropolitan city in the Sunsari District of Koshi Province of Nepal. Itahari city is the business hub of eastern Nepal. It is the second most populous city in Eastern Nepal after Biratnagar. Situated at a distance of 25 kilometres north of the provincial capital of Biratnagar, 16 kilometres south of Dharan and 92 kilometres west of Kakarbhitta, Itahari serves as a junction point of the east-west Mahendra Highway and the north–south Koshi Highway. Bhedetar is a village development committee in Dhankuta District in the Koshi Zone of eastern Nepal. The main settlement began when the Dharan - Dhankuta Highway was completed in 1982. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 2643 people living in 513 individual households. It is 1,420 meters high from the sea level. It is actually on the border line of Sunsari and Dhankuta districts.

Dharan F.C. is a football club based in Dharan, Nepal. The club which plays its home game in Dharan Stadium also annually organizes Budha Subba Gold Cup. Due to A division centered around 14 clubs in Kathmandu, many talented footballing youths are forced to leave for Kathmandu for footballing career. This has impacted all parts of Nepal including Dharan. Hence, it is one of the reasons that there are no decent stadiums except in Kathmandu.
Ramdhuni is a municipality located in the Sunsari district, Koshi Province of Eastern Nepal. It was established in 2014. Ramdhuni previously known as Jhumka Bazar. It is approximately 356km far from Kathmandu. This town lies in the middle of two famous cities Itahari and Inaruwa. Mahendra highway passes right through the heart of the town. Chatara Canal originates all the way from Koshi River and flows through the town from north to south. This canal plays an important role in the agriculture of Sunsari and Morang district. Ramdhuni has a total area of 48.10 square kilometers. It has a population of 28,549 of which 13,211 are males and 15,388 are females living in 6347 individual houses.
The 2017 Budha Subba Gold Cup is the 19th edition of the Budha Subba Gold Cup held in Dharan and organised by Redbull. 10 teams participated in the tournament. The defending champions Manang Marshyangdi Club did not participate. All matches were held at the ANFA Technical Center Dharan-17. In total, eight teams from Nepal participated in the tournament and were joined by two teams from India. United Sikkim FC from Gangtok, India was also supposed to play in this tournament but had to withdraw due to a "technical problem". It was replaced by Kanchanjunga FC.

Municipal election for Dharan took place on 13 May 2022, with all 102 positions up for election across 20 wards. The electorate elected a mayor, a deputy mayor, 20 ward chairs and 80 ward members. An indirect election will also be held to elect five female members and an additional three female members from the Dalit and minority community to the municipal executive.
Miss Grand Nepal 2018 was the second edition of the Miss Grand Nepal beauty pageant, held on August 4, 2018, at the Hotel Gurkha Heritage in Kathmandu. Ten contestants, who qualified through the audions held countrywide, competed for the title, of whom a 26-year-old media personality from Kathmandu, Urussa Joshi, was named the winner, and received रु50,000 rupee cash and a Suzuki scooter as the prize, while the first and the second runners-up, Eksha Maden of Dhangadhi and Riya Gaihre of Lalitpur, obtained cash of रु30,000 and रु20,000 rupee, respectively. Urussa Joshi then represented Nepal at Miss Grand International 2018 held later that year on October 25 in Myanmar, but she got a non-placement.
