Biratnagar is a metropolitan city in Nepal, which serves as the capital of Koshi Province. With a population of 242,548 as per the 2011 census, it is the largest city in the province and also the headquarters of Morang district. As per the preliminary report of 2021 Nepal census, Biratnagar has an estimated city population of 244,750. It is one of the cities of the Greater Birat Development Area which incorporates the cities of Biratnagar-Itahari-Gothgau-Biratchowk-Dharan primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal, with an estimated total urban agglomerated population of 804,300 people living in 159,332 households. Biratnagar is located 399 km (248 mi) east of the capital, Kathmandu, and 6 km (3.7 mi) north of the bordering town of Jogbani in the Indian state of Bihar.
Dharan is a sub-metropolitan city in Sunsari District of Koshi Province, Nepal, which was established as a fourth municipality in the Kingdom in 1958. It is the third most populous city in Eastern Nepal after Biratnagar and Itahari. The Nepali word "dharan" means a saw pit. The rainforest from which the tree trunks came is still just on the edge of the city. Much later the British Gurkha camp opened in October 1960. The use of the camp by British Gurkhas finished in the mid 1990s. Dharan has an estimated city population of 173,096 living in 34,834 households as per the 2021 Nepal census. It is one of the cities of the Greater Birat Development Area which incorporates the cities of Biratnagar-Itahari-Gothgau-Biratchowk-Dharan primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal, with an estimated total urban agglomerated population of 804,300 people living in 159,332 households. Ranipokhari Corner Team is a Nepalese football club from Kathmandu. It is the second-most successful team in the history of the Martyr's Memorial A-Division League, having won the title six times. In 2013–14, facing serious financial problems, the team was relegated from the Nepalese top division, the Nepal A- Division League.

The competition is held yearly in Dharan, Province No. 1 by Dharan Football Club every year in Nepal. The competition is the premier cup that has kept the aspiring Nepalese football alive and showcases the young and experienced talents from all of Nepal best clubs.
African United Club (AUC) are an all-star association football club in Nepal composed of the best African talent in the country. Mainly from the top flight clubs. However, due to the lack of a professional African goalkeeper in Nepal, a Nepalese goalkeeper is used. AUC currently hold the title of 2014 Udayapur Gold Cup winners. The current captain is Victor Amobi.
Hong Kong Nepalese Football Association (HKNFA) are an all-star association football club composed of top flight Nepalese players from various football clubs in Hong Kong. They regularly participate in the major tournament in Nepal, the Budha Subba Gold Cup.
Koshi Province is the autonomous easternmost province adopted on 20 September 2015 by Constitution of Nepal. The 2017 Budha Subba Gold Cup is the 19th edition of the Budha Subba Gold Cup held in Dharan and organised by Redbull. 10 teams participated in the tournament. The defending champions Manang Marshyangdi Club did not participate. All matches were held at the ANFA Technical Center Dharan-17. In total, eight teams from Nepal participated in the tournament and were joined by two teams from India. United Sikkim FC from Gangtok, India was also supposed to play in this tournament but had to withdraw due to a "technical problem". It was replaced by Kanchanjunga FC.
The 2016 Budha Subba Gold Cup was the 18th edition of the Budha Subba Gold Cup held in Dharan and sponsored by Red Bull. Eight teams from Nepal, Bhutan and India participated in the tournament. All matches were held at the ANFA Technical Center Dharan.
The 2015 Budha Subba Gold Cup was the 17th edition of the Budha Subba Gold Cup held in Dharan and sponsored by Red Bull. Seven teams from Nepal and one from India participated in the tournament. All matches were held at the ANFA Technical Center Dharan. A lot of changes were made regarding the format of the tournament, the tournament took place in February as opposed to April, when it previously took place. Also, the prize money for the winning team was increased to make the tournament more attractive. Belgharia Sporting Club from Calcutta, India, who won this tournament in 1999, was also meant to join the tournament but was replaced by another Indian Team, Sikkim Sunalchu FC.
2018 Budha Subba Gold Cup is a football tournament of Nepali Football. This is the 20th session of Budha Subba Gold Cup. Three Star Club won this football tournament against Nepal Police Club.
Municipal election for Dharan took place on 13 May 2022, with all 102 positions up for election across 20 wards. The electorate elected a mayor, a deputy mayor, 20 ward chairs and 80 ward members. An indirect election will also be held to elect five female members and an additional three female members from the Dalit and minority community to the municipal executive.
