Diego Janssen (born December 9, 1981, in Montevideo) is an Uruguayan guitarist, composer and record producer.
His debut album 'El hijo de' was nominated for the Premios Graffiti, the Uruguayan equivalent of the Grammys. Critics have called 'El Hijo De' one of Uruguay's best albums of the decade [1] - breaking ground for a new evolution of candombe. He has been awarded a Uruguayan National Music Award twice in the jazz fusion category.
As a composer he does not cling to any particular style, although there's a clear tendency to experimentation and the fusion of elements of Uruguayan roots music (candombe, tango, folklore), as well as the influence of his time in the studio as a producer and his academic studies in music and technology.
A self-taught guitarist he started playing rock, pop and Uruguayan folklore as a teenager. His early influences included The Beatles and Nirvana, Uruguayan stars of candombe Jaime Roos and Totem and the flamenco guitarist, Paco de Lucía.
He formed his first rock fusion band in 2000 and at the same time he decided to drop out of college where he was studying engineering to dedicate himself full-time to music. He began a degree in composition at the University School of Music in Montevideo and in parallel studying sound, acoustics and recording studio design.
Since 2008 as a producer he has recorded and produced more than thirty albums in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina. [2] He's hands-on, participating or leading production, recording, mixing and / or mastering, and at times as a session musician. In 2016 he was nominated for Best Producer in the Premios Graffiti for his work on the album 'Nidal' by dark rock band Buenos Muchachos.
During this period he participated as guitarist in a number of bands including Trelew, Damián Gularte, Ojos del Cielo and Sebastián Jantos. And at the same time he deepened his exploration of roots music from Uruguay, and elsewhere in Latin America and North America.
In 2010 as part of the duo Afrosambas with percussionist José 'Pepe' Martínez, he recorded a set of instrumental versions of compositions by Baden Powell, Astor Piazzolla, Pink Floyd and Eduardo Mateo.
His debut solo album 'El Hijo de' [3] won critical acclaim as well as a nomination for the Premios Graffiti in 2016 in the category Candombe Fusion.
The album is an instrumental journey of experimentation and changing sound climates, where elements coming from across the world collide. Blues rock and jazz meet contemporary candombe and milonga, going through both psychedelic and other more manic moments, generating a tribal feeling from a modern optic.
El Hijo de received support from FONAM, the Uruguayan fund for music.
The most distinctive music of Uruguay is to be found in the tango and candombe; both genres have been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Uruguayan music includes a number of local musical forms such as murga, a form of musical theatre, and milonga, a folk guitar and song form deriving from Spanish and italian traditions and related to similar forms found in many American countries.
Candombe is a style of music and dance that originated in Uruguay among the descendants of liberated African slaves. In 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed candombe in its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

El Peyote Asesino is a Uruguayan rock band formed in 1994 in the Villa Española neighborhood (Montevideo). It is made up of Fernando Santullo —credited as "L. Mental"— and Carlos Casacuberta on vocals, Daniel Benia on bass, Juan Campodónico on guitar, Bruno Tortorella on keyboards, Matías Rada on guitar and Pepe Canedo on drums. His style combines heavy metal, funk, and rap, something that was atypical in the Uruguayan rock scene at that time.
Juan Campodónico, sometimes working under his stage name Campo, is an Uruguayan musician, producer, composer, creator and former member of El Peyote Asesino, Bajofondo and Campo. He produced albums by Jorge Drexler, Luciano Supervielle, Bajofondo, El Cuarteto de Nos, La Vela Puerca, OMAR, Sordromo, No Te Va Gustar, Santullo and Ximena Sariñana among others. He created the Bajofondo project alongside iconic producer and two-time Academy Award winner for Best Original Score Gustavo Santaolalla. He has been awarded with various Latin Grammy, Premios Gardel and Graffiti awards for his work as a producer, as well as with many golden records.
Omar Ruben Rada Silva is a Uruguayan percussionist, composer, singer and television personality.
Jaime Roos is an Uruguayan singer, composer and record producer. In 2000, he won a Silver Condor Award for Best Score Musician in El Amateur. He has French blood from his father's side. His grandfather migrated from Germany at the end of 19th century.
Pablo Sciuto is a Uruguayan musician, composer, poet and record producer born in the city of Montevideo, with twelve released albums where he combines rhythms like “Indie Pop”, Jazz, Bossa Nova and Candombe with an electronic sound. He's created a very particular style and has positioned himself in the wave of new creators of Rio de La Plata. At the present time Pablo lives in the city of Madrid, Spain since the year 2000.
Bajofondo is a Río de la Plata-based music band consisting of eight musicians from Argentina and Uruguay, which aims to create a more contemporary version of tango and other musical styles of the Río de la Plata region. It was founded in the early 2000s as a studio experiment, which culminated into the successful album Bajofondo Tango Club. This led to touring and eventually to the current lineup. Bajofondo calls itself a collaborative as all members have solo careers as well. The group has toured around the world, particularly in Latin America, the United States, Europe and parts of Asia. Their music is known to a wider audience than those who know their name as their music has been used in film and television.
No Te Va Gustar, also known by their initials NTVG, is an Uruguayan rock band formed in 1994 in Montevideo. The group consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Emiliano Brancciari, bassist Guzmán Silveira, drummer Diego Bartaburu, trumpeter Martín Gil, trombonist Denis Ramos, tenor saxophonist Mauricio Ortiz, guitarist Pablo Coniberti and keyboardist Francisco Nasser. Considered as the most popular and international Uruguayan rock band, and one of the most recognized Latin American groups, No Te Va Gustar has released ten studio albums via Bizarro Records, four becoming a chart-topper in their native country.
Jorge Galemire was a Uruguayan guitarist, arranger, composer and vocalist and member of Trelew along with vocalist Karen Ann. Galemire is recognized as one of the earliest creators and exponents of candombe beat, on May 22, 2008, he was awarded a Graffiti for his lifetime's work. In 1975 he participated for a short time in the group Canciones para no dormir la siesta. In 1977 he co-founded Los que iban cantando, one of the most important groups in Uruguayan popular music during the military dictatorship.

Berta Pereira Majó is a Uruguayan percussionist, dancer, and actor who specializes in Afro-Uruguayan themes. In 1995, she founded the group Berta Pereira y las Comadres, which focuses on Afro-Uruguayan music and folklore. The band is well known for their candombe style of music and their participation in Memoria para armar, a musical performance and dramatic reading of testimonies by women imprisoned under the Uruguayan military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s.
