22-year-old Helena Andersson disappeared on 14 June 1992 in Mariestad, Sweden. Since then, several different suspects in her disappearance have been arrested, and later released without charge. The disappearance has received extensive media attention since 1992.

Disappearance

Helena Andersson had been at a friend’s housewarming party in Töreboda; later in the evening, she and a few friends decided to continue partying at the Stadshotellet nightclub in central Mariestad. [1] At 2 in the morning, she headed home by foot; an hour later, several witnesses heard a woman screaming. About 100 m (330 ft) from her parents' home, Andersson's rings and sandals were later found. [2] Also found were drips of blood. She has not been heard from since. [3] [2] The first man to be a suspect was a Danish man who witnesses had seen driving a white car, allegedly picking up Helena Andersson and driving away from the Stadshotellet. [1] He was arrested and later released. [4]

Investigation and arrests

In August 2019, DNA tests found traces of three different people on her sandals. [5] In August 2021, a man in his 60s was arrested in connection with Helena Andersson's disappearance. [6]

He was later released but remains a suspect in her disappearance. [7] In 2020, the Swedish police special cold case group in Gothenburg started investigating the case. [7] During the evening, Helena had called her sister to ask her if she had seen her wallet; her sister told her she would pay for a taxi home. [8] Helena decided to walk home anyway. [8]

Two rings and the sandals she had been wearing were found the day after her disappearance. [9] [7] Several witnesses told police they saw a white or possibly light coloured car near the place where Helena Andersson's belongings were found. [10] The 60-year-old suspect had a white car at the time of Helena Andersson's disappearance; since then, the car had been scrapped. This information was revealed to the public in 2021. [10] Witnesses heard a loud scream identified by them as that of a woman. [11]

In 2017, another man was arrested in suspicion of the disappearance but he was also released later. He was known in media as "the man with the pilot glasses". [12] [13]

In 2010, a white Volvo 744 was examined for evidence by investigators, due to tips from the public. It formerly belonged to an 80-year-old man who had died in a house fire. The car was deemed to not have anything to do with her disappearance. [3] In September 2021, investigators revealed that the 60-year-old suspect's DNA had been sent for analysis to the National Forensic Centre, to be matched to the blood traces found on her sandals. [14] After his arrest, police also searched his home and the area where Helena disappeared, without revealing any results to media. [15]

Her disappearance has also been linked to murderer Anders Eklund, but no charges have been brought. [16] [17]

On 20 June 2022, Swedish prosecutors handling the case decided to close all investigations on the case. [18] It will only be re-opened if new evidence emerges. [18]

The disappearance has been extensively mentioned in Swedish media, and Efterlyst, Veckans Brott, and Sveriges Radio have produced documentaries about the case. [19] [20]

In April 2021, Danish author Lotte Dalgaard published the book Mardrömmen i Mariestad — Historien om Helena Anderssons försvinnande (Nightmare in Mariestad — Story of Helena Andersson's disappearance). [4]

Criminologist Leif GW Persson states that he is certain he knows who kidnapped and murdered Helena Andersson, and has claimed to have spent over 1000 hours investigating the case. [21]

Christine Schürrer is a German criminal, convicted of murdering two Swedish children, and seriously injuring their mother with 15 blows to the head with a hammer, after attacking them in their home in Arboga, Sweden, on 17 March 2008. The motive for the murders has been identified as jealousy, since Schürrer had dated the children's stepfather in 2006 while he was on holiday on the Greek island of Crete where she was working at a local hostel.

Eva Magdalena Andersson is a Swedish politician and economist who has served as Leader of the Opposition since October 2022 and Leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party since 2021. She has served as a Member of the Riksdag for Stockholm County since 2014. She previously served as Prime Minister of Sweden from November 2021 to October 2022, Minister for Finance from 2014 to 2021 and Chair of the International Monetary and Financial Committee from 2020 to 2022.

On 15 May 2016, unrest occurred simultaneously in the Swedish towns of Norrköping and Borlänge, primarily in Million Programme Muslim-dominated public housing-areas, with stone-throwing against police and firefighters, car fires and arson attacks. The unrest took place across Sweden since late March. Public transportation was temporarily suspended in several areas due to stone-throwing against trams and buses. These incidents were mainly perpetrated by Muslim youths. These incidents were considered particularly notable as they represented the spread of unrest to outside the three major urban areas of Sweden. Across Sweden, more than 2,000 cars were set on fire between January and July 2016.

On 12 June 2015, four people, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed in a car bombing in Gothenburg, Sweden. The bombing was seen as part of the gang conflicts in the city, as at least one of the victims was a known gang leader.

On 7 April 2017, a vehicle-ramming Islamist terrorist attack took place in central Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. A hijacked truck was deliberately driven into crowds along Drottninggatan before being crashed into an Åhléns department store. Five people, the youngest an 11-year-old girl, were killed. 14 others were seriously injured.

On 31 August 2017, policeman Ted Eriksson and his colleague patrolled the area around Medborgarplatsen and Björns trädgård in Stockholm in conjunction with a sit-in protest concerning deportation of Afghan migrants from Sweden. The perpetrator, who had previously taken part in the protest, unprovokedly stabbed Eriksson in the neck from behind, the seriousness of the attack didn't cause any fatal injuries despite the spinal cord was punctured and the vertebra was fractured.

The murder of Karolin Hakim took place on the morning of 26 August 2019 in Malmö when Hakim, a Swedish female physician, was shot and fatally wounded in Malmö, Sweden. She died of her wounds at the hospital.

Wilma Andersson was murdered by her Swedish-Kurdish boyfriend in November 2019 in Uddevalla, Sweden. Her boyfriend was arrested in his absence 3 December and was apprehended 4 December.

On 29 August 2020, riots broke out in the Swedish cities of Malmö and Ronneby. After Swedish police prevented Rasmus Paludan, a Danish politician, from entering the country, far-right anti-immigration activists held protests and burned a Quran. In response, a mob of 300 migrants, mostly Muslims gathered in counter-protest, burned tires, threw rocks and chunks of concrete at the police and smashed bus shelters.

Events in the year 2021 in Sweden.

The double murder of 8-year-old Mohammed Ammouri and 56-year-old Anna-Lena Svensson happened on 19 October 2004 in Linköping, Sweden. Both where stabbed to death at Åsgatan in Linköping. The murders remained unsolved and with no suspects for 16 years until the new method of ancestorial DNA was used. In June 2020, a suspect was arrested and later found guilty of the murders and sentenced to psychiatric care indefinitely. It was the first time in Swedish history that the method of ancestorial DNA was used to solve any murder or other crime in Sweden.

On 3 March 2021 at around 15:00 local time, a 22-year-old man stabbed seven people in Vetlanda, Sweden. All victims survived; the perpetrator was wounded by police during his arrest. He was convicted of seven counts of attempted murder as well as a minor narcotics offense and sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2021.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Andersson cabinet</span> 56th Cabinet of Sweden

The Andersson cabinet was the government of Sweden following the resignation of Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and the hasty election of Magdalena Andersson as his successor. It was expected to be a coalition government consisting of two parties: the Swedish Social Democratic Party and the Green Party. In a late turn of events after the confirmation vote, the Green Party left the government cooperation due to the government's budget proposal failing in the Riksdag. The cabinet were originally planned to be installed on 26 November 2021 during a formal government meeting with King Carl XVI Gustaf, but Andersson decided to resign due to a precedent regarding changes in a government's composition; this happened just seven hours after the vote in the Riksdag. The Speaker then set Andersson up for a new confirmation vote to make sure she still had the Riksdag's approval.

Ida Victoria Karkiainen is a Swedish politician for the Social Democratic party. She was the Minister for Public Administration in Magdalena Andersson's cabinet from 30 November 2021 to the government's dissolution on October 17 2022.

Dag Olov Larsson is a Swedish politician and former member of the Riksdag, the national legislature. A member of the Social Democratic Party, he represented Stockholm Municipality between September 2018 and June 2022.

The murder of Tove Tönnies, on the night of 16 October 2022, became a highly publicized case in Sweden. The female suspects were arrested and later found guilty at trial at their first trial. The case became historic as both women became the first females under the age of 21 to be sentenced to life imprisonment. On appeal to the higher Court of Appeal Johanna Jansson received 16 years imprisonment, and Maja Hellman was released.
