Dnieper Flotilla is a riverine flotilla of the Ukrainian Navy consisting of two divisions and is tasked with patrolling and protecting the Dnieper. It was established in 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine amidst threats of a naval invasion from the north by Belorussian Dnieper fleet. It is in control of several small scale naval bases along the Dnieper.

History

In March 2022, during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, faced with a threat of invasion through the Dnieper by the Belorussian river fleet, based at Pinsk and Loev [1] including a total of 19 vessels [2] So the River fleet of the Ukrainian Navy was established, initially from armed civilian ships and then a total of 19 gunboats. [3] The two divisions of the fleet were also given control of multiple bases in multiple cities along the Dnieper. [4]

In September 2022, Sherp transferred a vessel to the regiment names as Sherp the Shuttle. [5] In November 2022, ten new vessels from the United States were incorporated into the fleet. [6]

In 2023, the river fleet which initially consisted only of the 26th River Ships Division tasked with protection of northern Dnieper included a second newly established division the 27th River Ships Division tasked with the protection of Southern Dnieper with the River fleet acting as a coordinating body. [7]

On May 26, 2023, the River Flotilla received Bucha which became the flagship of the 26th division and also that of the fleet. [8]

Structure

The fleet consists of two divisions tasked with patrolling northern and southern Dnieper respectively. [9]

The Project 58155 Gyurza-M class is a series of small armored gunboats in service with the Ukrainian Navy. The first two vessels were laid down at the Kuznia na Rybalskomu shipbuilding plant in October 2012. Originally it was planned to build nine such vessels by 2017. In December 2013 the Ministry of Defence withdrew its contract. The class is named after the Levant viper, Гюрза, Hiurza, in Ukrainian.

10th Naval Aviation Brigade is the sole Brigade of the Ukrainian Naval Aviation established in 2004 by the merger of 9th Mixed Marine Aircraft Squadron, 316th Separate Marine Aviation Squadron and the 555th Naval Helicopter Regiment. It operates a vast arsenal of fixed-wing, rotatory and unmanned aircraft. It was previously garrisoned at Novofedorivka but is currently based at Mykolaiv.

Centaur-class fast assault craft Class of small craft of the Ukrainian Navy

The Project 58181 Centaur (Kentavr)/Project 58503 Centaur-LK class is a series of small armored assault craft being built for the Ukrainian Navy. The first two vessels were laid down at the Kuznya na Rybalskomu in December 2016. The 58181 project was developed by State Research and Design Shipbuilding Center on the basis of the Gyurza-M-class gunboats, and the 58503 project number was assigned to the altered design used after construction of the first eight units began (by the contractor that oversaw their construction, PJSC ZLK. Designed for carrying patrol service on rivers and coastal maritime areas, delivery and landing of marines.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Capture of Southern Naval Base</span> Blockade during the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation

The siege of Southern Naval Base lasted from 3 March 2014 until its definitive capture on 27 March 2014. The action began with the blockade of Donuzlav bay by the Russian missile cruiser Moskva. The Russian Navy later scuttled the Russian anti-submarine ship Ochakov and several smaller vessels in the mouth of the bay to prevent Ukrainian ships from sailing to open sea and reaching the Ukrainian fleet in Odesa. As a result, 13 Ukrainian ships were bottled up and eventually captured by Russia in Donuzlav bay. The blockade ended when the Russian Navy seized the last ship under the Ukrainian flag in Crimea, the minesweeper Cherkasy.

The ship is named after Ivan Mazepa, a Ukrainian Cossack leader who turned against the Tsardom of Russia of Peter the Great and joined the side of Charles XII of Sweden during the Swedish Invasion of Russia.

26th Naval River Ships Division is one of the two divisions of the Ukrainian Dnieper Fleet and till 2023 it was the only division of the fleet. It was established in 2022 and is tasked with protection of the Northern Dnieper against any possible Russian or Belorussian invasion attempt from the north and saw action during the Northern Ukraine campaign.

It was established in 1976 as a part of the Soviet Armed Forces and was transferred to Ukraine following its independence. It was originally a part of the Ukrainian Navy and became a part of the Marine Corps after its formation. It is currently based at Mykolaiv.

385th Unmanned Surface Vehicles Brigade is a Brigade of the Unmanned Systems Forces. It was established in August 2023 as a part of Ukrainian Navy operated by USV operatives from GUR and SBU. It is the world's first and currently, the only military unit dedicated to the operation of Unmanned Surface Vehicles.
