Dominic Certo is an American businessperson and author. He has been nominated for the American Book Award, and served as an international judge for the International Federation of BodyBuilding & Fitness (IFBB).
Dominic Certo served in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. [1] He has since served as an advisor and chairman of the advisory board for Operation Homefront. [2] In business, Certo has served as President of Hillside Publications, [3] and Chairman of The Certo Group, a food services company [4] founded by Certo in 1985 and which went public in 2004. He also ran a restaurant chain called LA Café. Certo was knighted by the Royal Family of The Reigning Order of St. John in Russia. He has also received two Presidential Volunteer Service Awards. [5]
In 1981 Certo was named by the IFBB a judge for that year's Mr. Olympia competition. [6] From 1980 to 1986 he served as the Director of the Professional Division Judging for the IFBB, and from 1985 to 1990 he was the Vice President of the Professional Division. He was also the co-producer and director for the 1988 Mr. Olympia and was the awarded the IFBB Silver Medal. Certo is both now a coach and a prior national competitor in the sport himself. [7]
Certo wrote the book The Valor of Francesco D'Amini, a fictionalized account of a Marine platoon during the Vietnam War. [8] It was nominated for the 1980 American Book Award, and received the 1979 Vega's Writer Award for Prose. [9] In 2006 Certo self-published the book Success-Pure and Simple: How to Make It in Business, Sports and the Arts!, which focuses on using lessons from athletics and applying them to various professional fields. [10] Certo is the co-author of the book Gold in the Coffins, [2] released in 2015 and co-written with Len Harac. The novel follows the story of an ex-Marine who builds a gourmet coffee company only to have a Wall Street firm lure them into a predatory IPO. This led to him being awarded the 2015 Literary Artist Of The Year by the NJ State General Assembly. [11]
Bodybuilding is the practice of progressive resistance exercise to build, control, and develop one's muscles via hypertrophy. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. It is primarily undertaken for aesthetic purposes over functional ones, distinguishing it from similar activities such as powerlifting and calisthenics.
The Universe Championships are annual worldwide bodybuilding events organised by the British National Amateur Body-Builders' Association (NABBA). Originally promoted as the Mr. Universe contest, the event was expanded to include women's classes in 1968. Notable previous winners include bodybuilder, actor, and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, and bodybuilder and actor Steve Reeves (1926–2000).

Mr. Olympia is the title awarded to the winner of the professional men's bodybuilding contest in the open division at Joe Weider'sOlympia Fitness & Performance Weekend—an international bodybuilding competition that is held annually and is sanctioned by the IFBB Professional League. Joe Weider created the contest to enable the amateur Mr. Universe winners to continue competing and to earn money. The first Mr. Olympia was held on September 18, 1965, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York City, with Larry Scott winning his first of two straight titles. The equivalent female title is Ms. Olympia.
Ronald Dean Coleman is an American retired professional bodybuilder, who is widely regarded as the greatest professional bodybuilder of all-time. Known as "The King", Coleman shares the all-time record for most Mr. Olympia titles at eight with Lee Haney. The winner of 26 IFBB professional titles including the Mr. Olympia for eight consecutive years, he is also renowned for his combination of size and conditioning, dominant body-parts and extremely heavy workouts, making him the strongest Mr. Olympia of all-time.

Lee Labrada is a professional bodybuilder, published author and CEO of Labrada Nutrition. He won the title Mr. Universe in 1985 and placed top 4 for seven consecutive years in Mr. Olympia. He was a high-intensity trainer, utilizing low workout volume and pushing sets to failure and beyond. In 2002, at the request of the city of Houston, Labrada launched the "Get Lean Houston" campaign to combat the city's obesity problem. In 2004, Labrada was inducted into the IFBB Pro-Bodybuilding Hall of Fame. In 2005 he wrote a fitness book. He founded the company Labrada Nutrition, which sells nutritional supplements. He is father of bodybuilder Hunter Labrada.
Edward Charles Corney was an American professional bodybuilder. He won many prizes in his 30s, including Mr. Universe in 1972, and was featured in the 1977 bodybuilding docudrama Pumping Iron. Known for his excellent posing routines, he continued competitive bodybuilding into his 60s, winning the 60+ division of the Masters Olympia twice. Corney was inducted in the International Federation of BodyBuilding Hall of Fame in 2004.
Richard Gaspari is an American retired professional bodybuilder, and a former member of the IFBB. He came in second place at the 1986, 1987, and 1988 Mr. Olympia competitions.
Kenny Waller is an American former bodybuilder featured in the 1977 movie Pumping Iron, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Waller also won the 1975 International Federation of Bodybuilders (IFBB) Mr. Universe contest in Pretoria, South Africa. He was known for his curly red hair, freckles and his graceful, confident posing style.
Samuel Jaskilka was a U.S. Marine four-star general whose last assignment was Assistant Commandant of the United States Marine Corps (1975–1978). General Jaskilka was a highly decorated veteran of the Korean War, having led the landing at Inchon as a company commander with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1978 after 36 years of service.
