From 1956 to 1958 and from 1964 to 1970, she was a cultural program producer for the national radio broadcasting of Senegal and the Office de co-operacion radiophonique. [2]

Personal life

Aguessy has three children. [2]

She currently lives in Brussels, where she's settled since 1973. [2]

Career

Union work

From 1973 to 1985, she held three four-year elective mandates as deputy general secretary of the World Confederation of Labor. [2]

Sociological work

Aguessy was a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the ULB in Brussels working with Gabriel Thoveron. [2]

From 1985 to 2000, she worked for the European Commission and the Association of the ACP chambers of commerce, making research trips to Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, Central Europe, the United States and Canada. [2]

Literary work

Her literary career began in 1993, with the publication of her first collection of poems Les chemins de la sagesse, contes et légendes du Sénégal et du Bénin (en: "The Paths of Wisdom, Tales and Legends of Senegal and Benin"). She calls literature her third career. [2]

She considers her third poetry collection Comme un souffle fragile, poèmes méditations, published by édition Parole et Silence in 2005, to be primarily about hope, since she believes the focus when talking about Africa is too much on misery, as opposed to the happiness she sees. [2]

Her work often also includes themes of spirituality. [3]

The Tammari people, also known as Batammariba, Tamberma, Somba, Otamari or Ottamari, are an Oti–Volta-speaking people of the Atakora Department of Benin where they are also known as Somba and neighboring areas of Togo, where they are officially known as Ta(m)berma. They are famous for their two-story fortified houses, known as Tata Somba, in which the ground floor houses livestock at night, internal alcoves are used for cooking, and the upper floor contains a rooftop courtyard that is used for drying grain, as well as containing sleeping quarters and granaries. These evolved by adding an enclosing roof to the clusters of huts, joined by a connecting wall that is typical of Gur-speaking areas of West Africa.

Father Henry Gravrand was a French Catholic missionary to Africa and an anthropologist who has written extensively on Serer religion and culture. He was one of the leading pioneers of interfaith dialog and believed that African religion was the "'first covenant between God and man". His works about the Serer people are cited by other historians and scholars writing on Serer history, religion and culture, for instance Martin A. Klein, Charles Becker, Alioune Sarr, Marguerite Dupire, Issa Laye Thiaw, etc. Papa Massène Sene argues that his approach lacks scientific rigor and include fundamental linguistic and historical errors. Alioune Sarr noted that Gravrand reported an oral tradition describing what he called the "Battle of Troubang", a dynastic war between the two maternal royal houses of Ñaanco and the Guelowar, an off-shot and relatives of the Ñaanco maternal dynasty of Kaabu, in modern-day Guinea Bissau. According to Charles Becker, Gravrand is confusing a description of the 1867 Battle of Kansala.
