Don M. Carlson (born December 30,1938) is an American educator and politician who served in the Washington House of Representatives from the 49th district from 1993 to 2001 and in the Washington State Senate from the 49th district from 2001 to 2005. Kelly Cassidy is an American politician from Chicago. She is a Democrat and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. She was appointed to represent the 14th district,on Chicago's North Side,in April 2011 following incumbent Harry Osterman's election to the Chicago City Council. She took office on May 16,2011. Most notably Kelly Cassidy was the chief sponsor of House Bill 1438,making Illinois the first state to legalize the Adult-Use of Cannabis through legislature as opposed to a ballot measure.
Washington's 1st legislative district is one of 49 districts in Washington state for representation in the state legislature. The T-shaped district is mostly north of the borders of King and Snohomish counties,stretching from High Bridge Road and Broadway Avenue in the east through the entirety of the cities of Bothell and Brier to I-5 in Mountlake Terrace in the west,though the district sweeps south of Bothell to part of Kirkland and reaches to Lake Washington.

The Republican Party retained control of the United States Senate,making a net gain of two seats and defeating four Democratic incumbents in states that had voted for Trump in 2016. The 2017 United States elections were held,in large part,on Tuesday,November 7,2017. This off-year election featured gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey,as well as state legislative elections in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature and in the Virginia House of Delegates. Numerous citizen initiatives,mayoral races,and a variety of other local elections also occurred. Special elections were also held for one seat of the U.S. Senate,representing Alabama,and six seats of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Democrats picked up the governorship in New Jersey and the Alabama Senate seat that was up for a special election. The governorship in Virginia and the six House seats that were up for special elections did not change party hands.
The Virginia House of Delegates election of 2017 was held on Tuesday,November 7. All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates were contested. The Republican Party held a 66–34 majority in the House of Delegates before the election but lost 15 seats to the Democratic Party,resulting in the Republicans holding a 50–49 advantage. After a recount,the result of the election in the 94th district was called a tie. The candidate to hold the seat was determined by random drawing on January 4,2018,which resulted in the Republicans holding a 51–49 majority.
A special election was held on November 7,2017,to fill the vacant seat in the Washington State Senate representing the 45th district. The seat was left vacant after the death of incumbent Andy Hill in October 2016. Dino Rossi,a former candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010 and for governor in 2004 and 2008,was appointed to fill the seat until the election. He announced that he would not run for the seat. The election was then contested between Manka Dhingra of the Democratic Party and Jinyoung Lee Englund of the Republican Party,who advanced as the top two finishers in the August primary. Dhingra won the election by more than ten percent,giving the Democratic caucus a 25–24 majority for the 2018 session.
