Don Kirby Cook [1] (born May 25, 1949) [2] is an American record producer and songwriter whose work is mainly in the field of country music. Artists who recorded Cook's material include Barbara Mandrell, John Conlee, Mark Collie, Wade Hayes and Brooks & Dunn. Cook's production work began in the early 1990s when he worked with Brooks & Dunn.

Musical career

Don Cook began writing songs at age twelve and recorded his first demo at age fourteen. He played at various clubs and coffeehouses in Houston, Texas during his teenage years, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee through the suggestion of a friend. [3] Through the assistance of Don Gant, he signed with Acuff-Rose Music. [3] In the 1980s, Cook had several cuts that were released as singles, including "Lady Lay Down" by John Conlee, which was Cook's first Number One as a songwriter. [3]

Cook co-wrote "Brand New Man", the first single release by Brooks & Dunn, and was asked to produce for the duo as well. At first, he was reluctant, but he was encouraged to keep producing after the commercial success of Brooks & Dunn's debut album. [4] Over time, Cook produced most of Brooks & Dunn's material, including thirteen of their songs which went to Number One. [3] Other artists who released his work as singles include Mark Collie, Wade Hayes, Lari White and Steve Wariner. [3]

In 1994, Cook was named Chief Creative Officer and Senior Vice President of Sony/ATV Music Publishing. [4] He retired from both positions in 2004, but has continued to write songs. [5]

The song went on to become a top 20 hit on Billboard's Hot Country Songs reaching #16 in March 2003, the highest-charting debut single by a female country artist for that year. Her self-titled debut album, Jennifer Hanson, was released that same year on Capitol Records to critical acclaim, and in 2003 Hanson was nominated for the Top New Female Vocalist award from the Academy of County Music. She received a nomination that same year for CMT Breakthrough Video of the Year for her video “Beautiful Goodbye”, directed by Trey Fanjoy.

Tony Wade Hayes is an American country music artist. Signed to Columbia Records in 1994, he made his debut that year with his gold-certified album Old Enough to Know Better. Its title track, which served as his debut single, reached Number One on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts, and three more singles from it all reached Top Ten as well.

Bobby Olen Pinson is an American country music artist. Signed to RCA Nashville in 2005, Pinson made his debut that year with his album Man Like Me. "The Long Goodbye" is a song written by Irish singer-songwriters Paul Brady and Ronan Keating for Brady's 2000 album Oh What a World. In October 2001, it was released by American country music duo Brooks & Dunn as the third single from their album Steers & Stripes. Ronan Keating released his version in April 2003 as the last single from his album Destination (2002).

Cowboy Town is the tenth studio album by country music duo Brooks & Dunn, released in 2007 by Arista Nashville and their last studio album before their five-year hiatus from 2010 to 2015 and their most recent album of original material as of 2020. Produced by the duo and Tony Brown, the album has accounted for four Top 20 country singles on the Billboard country singles charts: "Proud of the House We Built," "God Must Be Busy," "Put a Girl in It," and "Cowgirls Don't Cry."
