Douglas Melini is a New York City and New Jersey based American painter and a CalArts alumnus. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]
Melini's paintings are combinations of patterned optical illusions and painterly abstract expression that explore the relationship between color, texture, and space. He often extends his patterns and vibrant colors across the frame, adding a third-dimension to the work. In more recent works, Melini has explored layering different textures over his signature geometric patterns with thick paint strokes. His once completely abstract work has become more pictorial in nature, referencing the landscape. Melini holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]
Melini's first solo show in NYC was at the historical White Columns, where the artist showed a 63 foot long painting that was hung wall to wall in one of the galleries' famous white rooms. [15] [16] [10]
Melini was represented by the famous and groundbreaking gallery Feature Inc. until the death of Hudson (the gallery's owner and creator) in 2014. The artist is currently represented by VanDoren Waxter with locations on the Lower East Side and Uptown. Douglas Melini paintings are a fusion of various art movements like Minimalism and Pattern and Decoration. This is described as "This odd couple meets in jagged, symmetrical patchworks that reprise the Minimalist grid in patterns that resemble fabrics, specifically the checks, plaids and tattersalls of shirts, vests, handkerchiefs and jacket linings. A fastidious, distinctly physical sense of craft prevails, with a tolerance for little drips and slurps of paint that softens its slight obsessiveness." by Roberta Smith of The New York Times . Taut surfaces in his works are described as "dizzyingly intricate" which is credited to the array of pictorial references that have been built into them. [23]

John Dwyer McLaughlin was an American abstract painter. Based primarily in California, he was a pioneer in minimalism and hard-edge painting. Considered one of the most significant Californian postwar artists, McLaughlin painted a focused body of geometric works that are completely devoid of any connection to everyday experience and objects, inspired by the Japanese notion of the void. He aimed to create paintings devoid of any object hood including but not limited to a gestures, representations and figuration. This led him to the rectangle. Leveraging a technique of layering rectangular bars on adjacent planes, McLaughlin creates works that provoke introspection and, consequently, a greater understanding of one's relationship to nature.
Barbara Takenaga is an American artist known for swirling, abstract paintings that have been described as psychedelic and cosmic, as well as scientific, due to their highly detailed, obsessive patterning. She gained wide recognition in the 2000s, as critics such as David Cohen and Kenneth Baker placed her among a leading edge of artists renewing abstraction with paintings that emphasized visual beauty and excess, meticulous technique, and optical effects. Her work suggests possibilities that range from imagined landscapes and aerial maps to astronomical and meteorological phenomena to microscopic views of cells, aquatic creatures or mineral cross-sections. In a 2018 review, The New Yorker described Takenaga as "an abstractionist with a mystic’s interest in how the ecstatic can emerge from the laborious."
