Dual front

Dual front is a design concept which allows a device to have two distinctive sides, one for each function. It is most commonly used in camera phones.

Advantages

The main advantage of using a dual fronted device is the enhanced ease of use by having distinctive functions for each side.

For example, having a mobile phone with a dual front for the camera encourages the user to hold the phone horizontally which reduces the learning curve because the buttons and functions are located in similar places to a common digital camera. [1]

The dual front concept began in 2003 when Sony Ericsson started its camera phone range with the T610 and T630 which could be held comfortably in the style of a real digital camera due to its side-mounted shutter button; they also had rear designs which loosely resembled the design of digital cameras. Sony Ericsson described the design of the T630 as 'Putting an end to phones having a front and a back, the T630 has two sides. One for the camera... the other for telephony...' [2]

With the announcement of the K700i and S700i, Sony Ericsson introduced a new marketing term, "Dual front" to refer to camera phone where the "back" of the handset is styled as the "front" of a digital camera, hence the term of "dual front". [3]

The market responded well to this design and Sharp was the next company to begin designing dual front products, by producing a clamshell phone with a dual front design (Sharp 902). [4] This had not been done before on clamshell phones as it was difficult to find a convenient location to put the camera due to the physical limitations.

Nokia, after observing the continued response towards mobile phones with dual front designs announced the 6111 [5] and the 6270/6280 in 2005, [6] all of which had a dual front element to them. They had also previously created a new design which involved the twisting of the top flip in order to create a camcorder like display (as on the 6260). [7] Whilst not strictly dual front, it was later elaborated more to form the N90, N92 and N93.

Samsung's UpStage, released in 2007, features a new form of dual front design, where one side is the phone side and the other side resembles an MP3 player. [8]

Other uses

Sony Ericsson also used the dual front design in the Japan release, the Sony Ericsson Radiden. On the back it had a separate screen for accessing radio functions. [9]

Launched in July 2006, the phones are the successor to the Sony Ericsson K750i. Both of the phones feature a 3.2-megapixel digital camera complete with a xenon flash, a protective lens cover, and a new "BestPic" bracketing feature, and are the first to be tagged with the Sony Cyber-shot branding. The new "BestPic" feature takes 9 full quality snapshots of a subject in quick succession, allowing the user to choose the best shots from them. On the entertainment front, the phones have a media player supporting MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ and WMA music files and 3GP/MPEG-4 video files. The phones also feature a RDS FM radio, and a Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot for expandable solid state memory. The K790/K800 models are also the first Sony Ericsson mobile phones to use ATI's Imageon 2192 graphics engine, which delivers a full 3D gaming graphics for Java and full support for its 3.2-megapixel camera. It is the phone used by James Bond in the 2006 Casino Royale film and trailers.

The Nokia 6111 is a mid-level GSM mobile phone released in June 2005. It sold in Asia, Europe, Australia, Brazil and in Mexico, but was not taken by any carriers in the United States.

Sony Ericsson K850i cell phone model

The Sony Ericsson K850i is a high-end mobile phone when released in October 2007. It was announced in June 2007 as the flagship product in Sony Ericsson's K ("Kamera") series, with a 5 megapixel CMOS camera sensor. The K850 was the first Sony Ericsson phone released outside of NTT DoCoMo to support microSD and microSDHC along with Sony's traditional M2. It also introduces the usage of three touch-sensitive softkeys right under the display and a new form of navigation button, omitting the classic joystick introduced with the Ericsson T68. The camera interface has been revamped to resemble the format of cybershot digital cameras. According to the manufacturer the UMTS talk time has been significantly increased to 3 hours 30 min over its predecessor, the K800 and K810.. It was Sony Ericsson's first 3.5G HSDPA supporting mobile phone, and was also the first 3G "global" mobile with supporting all major operating network frequency in the world including GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, HSDPA, UMTS 850, UMTS 1900, UMTS 2100.

The Sony Ericsson W580i is a mid range slider style mobile phone in the Walkman series. The phone was announced on 26 March 2007 and was released in early August. It is a 2.5G Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) GSM phone with EDGE capabilities and has a 2 megapixel camera. It comes in "Style White", "Boulevard Black", "Metro Pink", "Urban Grey", "Jungle Green" and "Velvet Red".

LG Viewty cell phone model

The LG-KU990 or LG-KE990 is a high-end mobile phone manufactured by LG Electronics, released in August 2007. It has a resistive touchscreen and was specially marketed for its camera, being the first touchscreen phone with a powerful camera. It was succeeded by the LG Renoir and later LG Viewty Smart.

Nokia 5610 XpressMusic

The Nokia 5610 is a slider mobile phone from Nokia part of the XpressMusic series. Introduced August 2007 and launched in December, it runs on the Series 40 platform. The 5610's design is similar to that of the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, with aluminium brushed sides and bold side colours of either red, blue, white, or pink. Above the regular D-pad with music buttons, the 5610 features a "sliding switch" below the display for navigation.

Sony Ericsson C905

The Sony Ericsson C905 is a high-end mobile phone in Sony's 'C' (Cyber-shot) range, which, along with the low-end 'S' (Snapshot) range cameras, supplants the earlier 'K' range of camera phones. It is the flagship model in Sony Ericsson's range for 2008 and it was released on 22 October 2008. It's the first 8-megapixel camera phone to be released outside Korea, while adding the Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and Wi-Fi function. Sony Ericsson T707

Sony Xperia S smartphone model

The Sony Xperia S is an Android smartphone from Sony launched at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. It is the first Sony-only branded smartphone after Sony acquired Ericsson's stake in Sony Ericsson in January 2012. The Xperia S has a 4.3 in (110 mm) touch-screen with the mobile BRAVIA engine which optimizes the picture, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, a 12.0-megapixel rear camera, HDMI-out, 1 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage.

The Samsung SGH-U900 is a slider mobile phone from Samsung Telecommunications. It was introduced at Mobile World Congress on 11 February 2008. It is a member of Samsung's fashion-focused "Ultra" line of handsets and the company's flagship at the time.
