Dustin Kirby (born December 12, 1984 in Mentor, Ohio) is an American association football defender who is well known for playing for Real Salt Lake.

Youth

Born and raised in the suburbs of Cleveland, Kirby played on the Impact team of the Cleveland Soccer Academy from 1994 through 2003. During that time he served as captain of the CSA Super Y team in 2002 and won a national championship in July 2003 as a member of the CSA Force Juniors of the U-19 Super Y League. As a member of the 2003 Ohio North State Team, he was named to the Region II pool.

Kirby graduated from Mentor High School in 2003 and was a 2003 NSCAA/Adidas Men's Soccer All-American. Kirby decided to attend Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. During his four years at Ohio State University he started every game but one (82 matches) during his career. Kirby was 1st-Team all Big Ten his senior year. He spent the 2004 collegiate offseason with the Cleveland Internationals in the USL Premier Development League.

Mentor High School is a public high school located in Mentor, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Mentor Exempted Village School District. At one time, it was the largest high school in Ohio based on single building enrollment. For the 2008–2009 school year, it shifted from a three-year school to a four-year high school, serving approximately 2,700 students. Mentor High School educates students from Mentor, Mentor-on-the-Lake, and parts of Kirtland Hills and Concord Township in Lake County, Ohio. Both middle schools from the Mentor Exempted Village School district, Memorial Middle School, Shore Middle School, feed into Mentor High School. The third middle school, Ridge Middle School, closed before the 2018-2019 school year had commenced, and has since been repurposed as an elementary school.

When the 2007 MLS Superdraft came along, Kirby was not initially selected, but he was taken later on, in the 4th round of the supplemental draft, by Real Salt Lake. In two seasons with the club, Kirby made two league appearances, as well as playing in an exhibition match against the national team of Fiji. His debut came on October 15, 2007 in a 1-0 loss against the Houston Dynamo.

The 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft was held on January 18, 2007, following the SuperDraft, as teams filled out their developmental rosters.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is a men's professional soccer league sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation which represents the sport's highest level in the United States. The league comprises 24 teams—21 in the U.S. and 3 in Canada and constitutes one of the major professional sports leagues in both countries. The regular season runs from March to October, with each team playing 34 games; the team with the best record is awarded the Supporters' Shield. Fourteen teams compete in the postseason MLS Cup Playoffs through October and November, culminating in the championship game, the MLS Cup. MLS teams also play in domestic competitions against teams from other divisions in the U.S. Open Cup and in the Canadian Championship. MLS teams also compete against continental rivals in the CONCACAF Champions League. The league plans to expand to 27 teams with the addition of Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC in 2020 and Austin FC in 2021, with further plans to expand to 28 teams by 2022 and 30 teams at a later date.
