Gendringen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is in the municipality of Oude IJsselstreek, about 12 km (7.5 mi) southeast of Doetinchem and 20 km (12 mi) northwest of the German city Bocholt. It has approximately 4400 inhabitants. In the Middle Ages, Gendringen was a fortress. Being property of the archbishop of Köln (Cologne), Gendringen was loaned to the lords living in the castle of 's-Heerenberg. In 1830, downtown Gendringen burned down for the most part. Nowadays, most of the entrepreneurs of the town are situated in the Grotestraat, which makes this street the most important street of downtown Gendringen. Gendringen was a separate municipality until 2005. Then, due to the municipal re-organization in the Achterhoek, Gendringen and Wisch joined into Oude IJsselstreek.

Bobbie Traksel is a Dutch former professional racing cyclist. In 2000, Traksel showed considerable promise by winning the Under-23 version of the Tour of Flanders and turned professional in 2001 with Rabobank. In 2002, Traksel's surprise win at the Veenendaal–Veenendaal showed his speed and bicycle smarts. But Traksel's achievements in 2008, highlighted by winning the Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen garnered him wider respect in the cycling community. In 2010 he won Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne after a long breakaway. The race was heavily influenced by the weather. Many favourites retired from the race due to the cold weather, rain and wind. Traksel proved himself as a real fighter with this win.

Geert Omloop is a Belgian former professional road racing cyclist who was born in Herentals. He is the cousin of fellow cyclist Wim Omloop and the son of Marcel Omloop. He became the Belgian National Road Race Champion in 2003, but lost the title in 2004 when he finished second.

The Geldersche Stoomtramweg Maatschappij was a 750 mm gauge steam tram that operated over 56 kilometres (35 mi) between Arnhem, Doetinchem and Gendringen in the Netherlands, with a short section extending to Isselburg in Germany. It was built in 1881 and was closed around 1957. Several other tramways were amalgamated into the Geldersche Stoomtramweg Maatschappij. The Geldersch-Westfaalsche Stoomtram-Maatschappij was taken over in 1920, The Geldersch Overijsselsche Stoomtram Maatschappij, originally a 1,067 mm gauge line, was amalgamated in 1934, when the GOSM gauge was reduced to 750 mm. The Tramweg Maatschappij Zutphen-Emmerik was also taken over in 1934, and the Tramweg Maatschappij De Graafschap in 1939.
