Dylan Valley is an award-winning South African filmmaker, born and raised in Cape Town. He has directed work with SABC, Al Jazeera, and independently. He teaches in the television studies department at Wits University.

Early years and Education

Valley grew up in Kuils River and then the white suburb of Durbanville where he faced being the only coloured child in the neighborhood. From this experience, he was pushed into the hip-hop music that constructed his identity. The Hip-Hop music genre led valley to incorporate this style within his another passion that is documentary filmmaking. And now, we can see his work which is a mix of music, art, performance, that tell stories about real people.

After graduating from Fairmont High School , Durbanville, he started to study Film and Media at the University of Cape Town and during this time, he did an internship at E-TV for 2 months. In 2005, as his final university project, he made a 10 minutes documentary about the history of the Cape Capoeira (Brazilian martial arts) scene. In 2006, he got his Honors degree in Film Theory and Practice from UCT and also produced a film, as his final thesis, called Lost Prophets with his co-producer and collaborator Sean Drummond, talking about Prophets of the city which shows the history of personal stories of South Africa's Hip Hop. The documentary was screened at various film festivals in South Africa. [1]

Career

In 2007 he worked at Plexus Films on the HEADWRAP team as a researcher and trainee director. And he got promoted to director straight away. Later, he was invited to direct some of the famous episodes from the series Headwrap including “Hip Hopera” and “Awareness thru Colours”. With Plexus Films, Valley developed a feature-length documentary, called Afrikaaps which explores the history of Afrikaans using Hip Hop, humour and personal perspective. The film, follows a group of local artists, creating the stage production, Afrikaaps, as they trace the true roots of Afrikaans to slaves in the cape. The documentary won Best South African Documentary at the Cape Winelands Film Festival. [2] Valley was also nominated for Best documentary director at the 2012 South African Film and Television Awards for his work on Afrikaaps. In 2009, he was selected in The Mail and Guardian's list of 300 Young South Africans you have to take to lunch. [3]

He has also directed two documentaries for Al Jazeera's Arabic documentary channel, on struggle icons Fatima Meer and Tatamkhulu Afrika. [4]

Valley's last film was about a gang member who becomes a gospel rapper. The movie called “Incarcerated Knowledge” follows Peter John Christians' release from prison for murder, and tracks his progress on his way to become a hip hop artist. [5]

Cape Coloureds

Coloured South Africans or Cape Coloureds are an ethnic group composed primarily of persons of mixed race. Although Coloureds form a minority group within South Africa, they are the predominant population group in the Western Cape.

Prophets of Da City (POC) is a hip hop crew from Cape Town, South Africa. They are composed of about eight members, though the exact membership fluctuates frequently; these include Ishmael Morabe (vocals), Mark Heuvel (dance), Shaheen Ariefdien, Ramone and DJ Ready D. Their style uses elements of hip hop music, reggae and traditional African rhythms. Their albums include Our World (1990), Boom Style (1992), Age of Truth (1993), Phunk Phlow (1994), Universal Souljaz (1995), and Ghetto Code (1997). They are currently signed under the independent record label Ghetto Ruff.

Fokofpolisiekar is an Afrikaans alternative rock band from Bellville, near Cape Town, South Africa. Due to the obscenity in the name, they are also commonly known simply as Polisiekar or FPK.

Tygerberg region of the City of Cape Town, South Africa

Tumi Molekane is a South African rapper and poet. He was the lead vocalist of Tumi and the Volume, that was officially disbanded in 2012. In 2016 Tumi relaunched himself as Stogie T and released an album called Stogie T which featured Da L.E.S, Lastee, Emtee, Nasty C, Nadia Nakai & Yanga. He has 2 singles from the album. The first single "Diamond Walk" features rapper Nadia Nakai in the video. His second single from the album is called "By Any Means" which features a hook and verses from Emtee and Yanga.

GHETTO RUFF is an independent South African recording label specializing in kwaito, hip hop, soul, house, gospel and rhythm and blues. Having been formed around the need to have a voice against apartheid GR released Prophets of da City who had tracks banned by the government of the day.

David Kramer (singer)

David Kramer is a South African singer, songwriter, playwright and director, most notable for his musicals about the Cape Coloured communities, and for his early opposition to apartheid.

Natalia da Rocha

Natalia Da Rocha is a pioneer South African actress, director, youth activist and businesswoman. She can be remembered as being one of the few persons of colour to appear in entertainment media during the Apartheid-era. In 1981 she was the first Coloured to graduate with a Drama degree from the Afrikaans dominant Stellenbosch University. Beginning 1987 she was the first woman of colour along with Sam Marais to star in a Sun City Extravaganza. In 1992, she became the first South African star to perform publicly in Madagascar. She is well remembered for her roles in musicals such as Ain't Misbehavin'; Midnight Blues; Godspell and Vere . Natalia was one of 40 inducted into the S.A. Legends Museum on 26 January 2020 in Johannesburg.

Sharlto Copley South African actor

Sharlto Copley is a South African actor. He has played Wikus van der Merwe in the Academy Award-nominated science fiction film District 9, Howling Mad Murdock in the 2010 adaptation of The A-Team, Agent C.M. Kruger in the science fiction film Elysium, James Corrigan in the science fiction horror film Europa Report and King Stefan in the dark fantasy adventure film Maleficent. Brasse Vannie Kaap

Brasse Vannie Kaap (BVK) was a hip-hop group that hailed from the Cape Flats in Cape Town, South Africa. They rapped predominantly in the Cape Flats dialect of Afrikaans. The original line-up included Deon Daniels (Boeta-D), Roger Heunis (Hamma), Ashley Titus and Enver Pietersen. Bboys Cheeze, Baby-L and Levi joined the group soon after they started to perform live.

Amore Bekker

Hetta Amor (Amore) Bekker is a South African radio personality, author, MC and columnist. She was the host of Tjailatyd, an Afrikaans radio show broadcast by RSG(Radio Sonder Grense) the Afrikaans Radio Service of the SABC. As author Bekker published her first cookbook (Tjailaresepte) in June 2010. As of July 2010 she also writes a column for the Afrikaans-language women's magazine Finesse.

André van der Merwe is a conductor, choral music arranger, and composer from Durbanville, Western Cape, South Africa. He studied for his Bachelor of Music at the University of Cape Town but due to an injury he changed his studies to a Bachelor of Drama (Directing). He served as the chairperson of the National Artistic Committee the 2016 World Choir Games held in Tshwane, South Africa.

Hoërskool Durbanville is a public Afrikaans medium co-educational high school situated in the town of Durbanville in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is a public school. It is the oldest High School in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, and the only other school older in Cape Town is Simons Town School in the southern suburbs.

Nosipho Dumisa is a South African writer and director. She wrote and directed her first feature film, the crime thriller Nommer 37. She also directed the Netflix show Blood and Water (2020). She works with Gambit Films, which she co-founded. She has also produced works, like the Afrikaans language soap opera Suidooster.

Stam is a 2020 South African Afrikaans-language thriller film written and directed by Louw Venter. The film stars Inge Beckmann, Gideon Lombard, Tarryn Wyngaard and Niza Jay in the lead roles. It was screened in few film festivals. The film also won the Best South African film award at the 2020 Durban International Film Festival.
