Dynamo Alma-Ata

Dynamo Alma-Ata (Russian : Динамо Алма-Ата) was a multi-sports club from the then capital of Kazakhstan, Almaty in the Soviet era. The club participated in wrestling, gymnastics, athletics, water polo, bandy and the most successful branch hockey. Several players combined bandy in the winter with hockey in the summer.

Russian is an East Slavic language, which is official in the Russian Federation, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as being widely used throughout Eastern Europe, the Baltic states, the Caucasus and Central Asia. It was the de facto language of the Soviet Union until its dissolution on 25 December 1991. Although, nowadays, nearly three decades after the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russian is used in official capacity or in public life in all the post-Soviet nation-states, as well as in Israel and Mongolia, the rise of state-specific varieties of this language tends to be strongly denied in Russia, in line with the Russian World ideology.

Kazakhstan, officially the Republic of Kazakhstan, is the world's largest landlocked country, and the ninth largest in the world, with an area of 2,724,900 square kilometres (1,052,100 sq mi). It is a transcontinental country largely located in Asia; the most western parts are in Europe. Kazakhstan is the dominant nation of Central Asia economically, generating 60% of the region's GDP, primarily through its oil and gas industry. It also has vast mineral resources.

Almaty, formerly known as Alma-Ata and Verniy, is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of 1,801,713 people, about 8% of the country's total population and more than 2 million in its built-up area that encompasses Talgar, Boraldai, Otegen Batyr and many others suburbs. It served as capital of the Kazakh state in its various forms from 1929 to 1997, under the influence of the then Soviet Union and its appointees. In 1997, the government relocated the capital to Astana in the north of the country and about 12 hours away by train.

Notables

Well-known members included the competitive artistic gymnast Valeri Liukin, the pole vaulter Grigoriy Yegorov, as well as the wrestlers Anatoly Nazarenko, Shamil Serikov and Anatoly Bykov. The co-founder of FC Spartak Moscow, Nikolai Starostin, coached both the football and hockey teams during his exile in Alma-Ata.

Valeri Viktorovich Liukin is a Russian-American retired artistic gymnast turned gymnastics coach. As a competitor for the former Soviet Union, Liukin was the 1988 Olympic champion in the team competition and individually on the horizontal bar, and Olympic silver medalist in the all-around and the parallel bars.

Grigoriy Aleksandrovich Yegorov is a former pole vault athlete from Kazakhstan.

Anatoly Nazarenko is a Kazakhstani former wrestler who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Sports

Water polo

The water polo men's team won Soviet Water Polo Championships in 1981 and 1982. In the 1982-83 season Dynamo's water polo team reached the European Champions cup final. Dynamo played a double final against Spandau 04 but after a 10:7 win in the first leg, the Soviet team lost the title, defeated by West Germany in the second leg with a 6:10 score.

The Soviet Water Polo Championship was the premier water polo in the Soviet Union. First held in 1925, it was disestablished in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and succeeded by the Russian Championship. Three teams from the Soviet Championship, CSKA Moscow, Dynamo Moscow and MGU Moscow, won the European Cup and/or the Cup Winners' Cup.

The LEN Champions League is the top-tier European professional water polo club competition with teams from up to 18 different countries. It is organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation.

The Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 is a swimming club in Spandau, Berlin, Germany. The club is known for the water polo team, which has won a record number of German championships. The club has over 3,500 members.

Bandy

In 1977 and in 1990, the club became Soviet national champions in bandy and in 1978 won the European Cup.

Bandy is a team winter sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a ball into the opposing team's goal.

The European Cup is an annual bandy club competition between teams from Europe. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1974. At present (2016), the Cup has not been played since 2009, but it is not formally defunct.

Hockey

The team became Soviet champions eighteen times.

Hayrapetyan was named an Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR in 1984. His son Levon is an association football player.

Kazakhstan consistently performs in Olympic competitions. It is especially successful in boxing. This has brought some attention to the Central Asian nation, and increased world awareness of its athletes. Kazakhstan's city of Almaty submitted twice bid for the Winter Olympics: In 2014 and again for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Astana and Almaty hosted the 2011 Asian Winter Games.

The Traktor Ice Hockey Club, also known as Traktor commonly Traktor Chelyabinsk, is a professional ice hockey team based in Chelyabinsk, Russia. They are members of the Kharlamov Division of the Kontinental Hockey League.

WVC Dinamo Moscow is a Russian women's volleyball club based in Moscow which is currently playing in the Super League. It was established in 1926 and dissolved in 1992, but was reestablished in 2004. It is the most successful team in Soviet women's volleyball history with fourteen Championship titles and the most successful team in the CEV Women's Champions League history with eleven titles.
