Major General E. George Thevanayagam, VSV was a Sri Lankan general, he served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, Commandant of the Volunteer Force, and later first Director of the National Cadet Corps. [1]

Born and educated in Jaffna, [2] Thevanayagam joined the Ceylon Army, following his training at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Ceylon Light Infantry. Promoted to Lieutenant, he was appointed Adjutant of the 1 Battalion Ceylon Sinha Regiment. [3] Captain Thevanayagam, married Sanders in Jaffna in 1961. [4] Brigadier Thevanayagam was in charge of arranging the funeral of the officer and troops of the patrol Four Four Bravo who were killed in Jaffna. [5] He retire as a Major General in 1986 after serving as the Commandant of the Volunteer Force and the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army. After his retirement he was appointed as the first Director of the National Cadet Corps.

Major General Thevanayagam has been awarded the service medals Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya, Ceylon Armed Services Long Service Medal and Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal.

The Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (SLAVF) is the active-duty volunteer reserve force of the Sri Lanka Army. The SLAVF is separate from the Regular Force which consists of personal who are professional soldiers and its Regular Reserve, which comprises personal who have a mobilization obligation following their service in the regular army. The SLAVF consists of the volunteer force and the volunteer reserve; administration and recruitment of reserve personal is carried out by the Volunteer Force Headquarters in Shalawa, Kosgama which is headed by the Commandant of the Volunteer Force. It has a current strength of about 55,000 personnel. The SLAVF was known as the Ceylon Volunteer Force from 1949 to 1972 and the Sri Lanka Volunteer Force from 1972 to 1985.

Major General Janaka Perera, RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, VSP was a Sri Lankan General and politician. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and is considered one of the most distinguished generals in Sri Lankan history. After retiring from the army he served as a Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and Ambassador to Indonesia. He was the opposition leader of the North Central Provincial Council until he and his wife were killed on 6 October 2008 by a suicide bomber. The LTTE have been blamed for the bombing by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
