On January 12, 1984, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This hotel was rumored to be haunted by several guests who had stayed there throughout the 1930s. Some even committing suicide in the hotel after Black Tuesday, the beginning of the Great Depression. According to a local paranormal researcher, the property is also home to the spirit of a sponge diver that hanged himself on the grounds before the Arcade Hotel was built. It is said that the spirit roams the grounds, still dragging the rope from his neck behind him.
