Tarboro is located near the western edge of North Carolina's coastal plain. It has many historical churches, some dating from the early 19th century.

Bertie Memorial Hospital is a critical access hospital located in Windsor, North Carolina. It is a part of ECU Health. The original hospital opened in 1952 with Hill-Burton Act funding. It is a three-story, masonry, International Style building with a flat roof. It closed temporarily in 1985 and underwent several turnovers in management. Vidant Health took over management in 1998 and provided money for a new hospital in September 2001. The hospital was the first in the nation constructed according to Critical Access Hospital standards. The federal Office of Rural Health Policy has designated it a national model for Critical Access Hospital construction. The hospital concentrates on same-day services. It has six general hospital beds.
Chowan Hospital is a critical access hospital located in Edenton, North Carolina. It is a part of the ECU Health system. In 1947 Chowan Hospital opened. It moved in 1950 and again to its present position in 1970. A wing was added in 1988. It joined with UHSEC in 1998. The Emergency Department at Pitt County Memorial Hospital was linked to Chowan Hospital in April 2001. The hospital has 49 general hospital beds and 40 general nursing home beds. It also has three Shared Inpatient/Ambulatory Surgery and one Endoscopy operating rooms.

It is one of nine air ambulances located in North Carolina, and can serve a radius of 230 nautical miles around Greenville without refueling.

Nash UNC Health Care, opened in 1971 as Nash General Hospital, is a general hospital located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. It was the first all-private-room hospital in North Carolina. It is home to a women's center, a cardiovascular services department, and a critical care unit. A subunit of the hospital, known as Nash Day Hospital, opened in 1984 as a free-standing outpatient surgery center. The hospital also operates the Bryant T. Aldridge Rehabilitation Center in honor of Kinston, North Carolina native Bryant T. Aldridge, the first manager of Nash General, which opened in 1999, and the Coastal Plain Hospital, a mental health facility. In 2004, the hospital opened a state-of-the-art Surgery Pavilion, followed in 2014 by the opening of a new Emergency Department and a new Nash Heart Center. In 2014, Nash Health Care became affiliates with UNC Health Care. In May 2016, the hospital opened the doors of its new $25 million Nash Women's Center.
