History and mission

Established in 1986, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to providing leadership and development opportunities for early- and mid-career surgeons involved in the acute surgical care of the ill and injured.

EAST furnishes a vital forum for the exchange of knowledge, fosters advances in trauma surgery, and promotes the rehabilitation and care of injured patients. Through its mission, EAST stimulates teaching and investigation in methods of injury prevention and treatment, while also cultivating a community grounded in leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and collaboration.

To support these goals, EAST has established lectureships, scholarships, and a Development Fund to promote, reward, and recognize excellence among trauma surgeons and allied professionals. With a global and growing membership, EAST continues to lead the field in education, professional development, and evidence-based improvement of trauma care worldwide.

Membership

EAST's membership includes more than 3,800 professionals such as trauma and acute care surgeons, burn surgeons, emergency physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, medical students, and other allied medical professionals.

Leadership and governance

Governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, EAST is supported by strategic divisions, committees, and task forces that drive its operations and initiatives. Honorary members are recognized for their significant contributions to trauma care and to the organization itself.

Programs and activities

Annual Scientific Assembly

EAST hosts its premier educational and networking event each January. This multi-day assembly features original research presentations, keynote addresses, special lectures (e.g., presidential and memorial lectures), short courses, workshops, and networking events.

Educational resources

EAST offers a suite of resources including the EAST Practice Management Guidelines (PMGs), Traumacast (podcasts), EAST Monthly Literature Reviews, In the Arena podcasts, EAST Minutes, and “Landmark Papers in Trauma and Acute Care Surgery.”

Practice management guidelines (PMGs)

Known for rigorous, evidence-based guidelines, EAST employs the GRADE methodology to ensure transparency and quality in guideline development. Topics span trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery.

Research and collaboration

EAST supports multicenter research trials, offers mentoring programs, and enables involvement in committees and task forces. Members can volunteer annually to contribute to key initiatives, including the Annual Scientific Assembly program.
