Eat! Vancouver is the largest consumer food festival in Canada. [1] which takes place annually in Vancouver, British Columbia. The three-day festival is held at BC Place, and showcases restaurants and food suppliers from British Columbia and across Canada. [2] Chefs compete in several cooking competitions; [3] one is for apprentice chefs, the Junior Culinary Competition. [4]

History

Founded by George Acs and Heather Angeard, the first Eat! Vancouver festival took place in 2003 at BC Place; [5] that year, there were 12 chefs and 95 exhibitors. [6] The 2005 festival had 30 celebrity chefs using three stages, and added an annual barbecue and chili competition which had previously run separately at Westminster Quay since the 1990s. [6]

In 2011 the festival moved to the Vancouver Convention Centre, but returned to BC Place in 2012.

2020 saw the event go on hiatus until 2021.

<i>The 100-Mile Diet</i>

The 100-Mile Diet: A Year of Local Eating is a non-fiction book written by Canadian writers Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon. In the book, the authors recount their experiences, including motivations and challenges, on restricting their diet, for one year, to include only foods grown within 100 miles of their residence. Beginning in March 2005, with little preparation the urban couple began only purchasing foods with ingredients they knew were all from within 100 miles. Finding little in grocery stores, they relied on farmers' markets and visits to local farms. Staples in their diet included seafood, chicken, root vegetable, berries, and corn. They lacked cooking oils, rice, and sugar. They preserved foods for use in the winter but ended with extra supplies.

Michael Allemeier

Michael Allemeier CMC is an Instructor of Culinary Arts at SAIT Polytechnic and former Winery Chef at Mission Hill Family Estate in Westbank, British Columbia Canada. Allemeier has served in his current position since August 2009. He provides instruction to over 500 students in the School of Hospitality and Tourism at SAIT. While at Mission Hill, Allemeier oversaw all food operations at the winery including the Terrace Restaurant, Private Dining, Banquets, Culinary Workshops and a product line of winery made preserves. Allemeier is a guest Chef on Food Network's Cook Like a Chef. In 2001, Allemeier was awarded the title of Certified Chef de Cuisine (CCC), Canada's second highest professional culinary accreditation designation. He describes his style of cooking as "Cuisine de Terroir."

Dine Out Vancouver Festival

The Dine Out Vancouver Festival, organized by Tourism Vancouver, is a citywide food festival held in Vancouver. It is the largest festival of its type in Canada, and attracts more than 100,000 local and visiting people to Vancouver's restaurants over 17 days each year.

The final challenge was held at the historic Elora Mill in Elora, Ontario, with shopping done at the St. Jacobs Farmers' Market in St. Jacobs, Ontario.
