Ed Troyer is an American law enforcement officer who is the sheriff of Pierce County in the U.S. state of Washington.
Troyer has served with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department since 1985. His previous assignments include patrol deputy in Lakewood,University Place,and the Peninsula Detachment. He held many special assignments as part of the Community Support Team,Crime Stoppers,Burglary Reduction Team,and the FBI Gang Task Force,where he received special commissions from the DEA and FBI.
Troyer is especially well known for the time spent as a prominent public information officer,a position he held from 1999 to 2020. He often appeared on local newscasts to comment on investigations,notably regarding Gary Ridgway. [1]
Troyer has been decorated with a Medal of Merit five times in his career in addition to a Lifesaving Award,two Patrol Impact Awards,and an Excellence in Traffic Safety Award from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
At the time of his election,Troyer was the executive director at Crime Stoppers,a member of the TAPCO Credit Union Board of Directors,and a commissioner with the Washington State Gambling Commission. [2]
On July 15,2021,Troyer signed an open letter penned by the Washington State Sheriff's Association affirming his support for the Second Amendment. [3]
On January 27,2021,at 2 A.M.,Troyer confronted a newspaper deliveryman named Sedrick Altheimer outside his Tacoma home after becoming suspicious of his vehicle driving through the neighborhood and entering and exiting driveways.
During the subsequent exchange,Troyer stated the man threatened to kill him. Altheimer claimed Troyer followed him in an unmarked SUV,called him a "porch pirate",and did not identify himself as a law enforcement officer. Troyer called the police using a number reserved for officers to be able to contact dispatchers directly. [4] The call was perceived as indicating an officer in distress,which precipitated a massive police response—the call going out to some 19 law enforcement agencies involving 42 units. Tacoma Police indicated Troyer retracted his claims regarding Altheimer's threats. [5] [6] Altheimer was briefly detained,and released.
Pierce County prosecutors declined to press charges,but on October 19,2021,after receiving a referral from Governor Jay Inslee,Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed charges against Troyer,one count of false reporting and one count of making a false or misleading statement to a public servant. [7] During the trial,Troyer testified that the media had characterized him as a racist,and the state as a liar.
On December 14,2022,a jury found Troyer not guilty of both charges. [8]
Troyer resides with his wife in Tacoma. They have served as foster parents for numerous children.
On April 25,2012,his 19-year-old adopted son Zachary was charged with third-degree rape of a child and third-degree child molestation for alleged sexual conduct with a 14-year-old girl. [9] He later pled guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge and was sentenced to electronic monitoring and community service. [10]

Pierce County is a county in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census,the population was 921,130,up from 795,225 in 2010,making it the second-most populous county in Washington,behind King County,and the 60th-most populous in the United States. The county seat and largest city is Tacoma. Formed out of Thurston County on December 22,1852,by the legislature of Oregon Territory,it was named for U.S. President Franklin Pierce. The wrongful conviction of Steve Titus was a miscarriage of justice in which Steve Gary Titus (1949–1985),an American businessman,was convicted wrongly of rape. Titus was dismissed from his job after the conviction and,though the charges were soon dismissed,he became long term unemployed. The crime was later determined to have been committed by serial rapist Edward Lee King. Journalist Paul Henderson was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for his work on the case. Jack Olsen's book Predator examined the investigation of the crime and the life of the real criminal.
On November 29,2009,four police officers of Lakewood,Washington were fatally shot at the Forza Coffee shop,located at 11401 Steele Street #108 South in the Parkland unincorporated area of Pierce County,Washington,near Tacoma. A gunman,later identified as Maurice Clemmons,entered the shop,shot the officers while they worked on laptops,and fled the scene with a single gunshot wound in his torso. After a massive two-day manhunt that spanned several nearby cities,an officer recognized Clemmons near a stalled car in south Seattle. When he refused orders to stop,he was shot and killed by a Seattle Police Department officer.
The 2012 United States House of Representatives elections in Washington were held on Tuesday,November 6,2012,to elect the ten U.S. representatives from the state,one from each of the state's ten congressional districts,a gain of one seat following the 2010 United States census. The elections coincided with the elections of other federal and state offices,including a quadrennial presidential election,and a U.S. Senate election. The state certified the returns on December 6,2012. Primary elections were held August 7,2012.

The Mineral,Washington murders,dubbed by the media as "the Tube Sock Killings," is a series of unsolved murders that occurred in remote areas of Lewis and Pierce County,Washington,near the remote community of Mineral,Washington,in 1985. The murder cases were widely publicized,and were featured on the television series Unsolved Mysteries in 1989.
Cannabis in Washington relates to a number of legislative,legal,and cultural events surrounding the use of cannabis. On December 6,2012,Washington became the first U.S. state to legalize recreational use of marijuana and the first to allow recreational marijuana sales,alongside Colorado. Between 2008 and 2011,a series of rapes in the suburbs around Seattle and Denver were perpetrated by Marc Patrick O'Leary,an Army veteran who had been stationed near Tacoma. The first victim,an 18-year-old woman known as Marie,reported to Sergeant Jeffrey Mason and Jerry Rittgarn that she had been raped at her home in Lynnwood,Washington. According to a later report,the bullying and hounding of her by the detectives led Marie to recant her statement,resulting in her being charged with making a false report of rape.

Manuel Ellis was a 33-year-old African American man who was killed by police during an arrest on March 3,2020,in Tacoma,Washington. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department initially claimed that Ellis had attacked a police car and officers,leading to the arrest. State prosecutors quoted civilian witnesses as saying that Ellis did not attack the police car or officers;they also said it was the officers who attacked Ellis after a conversation. Video of the incident showed officers repeatedly punching Ellis,choking him,using a Taser,and kneeling on him. State prosecutors stated that "Ellis was not fighting back",citing witness statements and video evidence. A police radio recording showed that Ellis said he "can’t breathe". Ellis told officers "can't breathe,sir" multiple times,according to prosecutors. Ellis was hogtied,face-down,with an officer on him,for at least six minutes,and a spit hood was placed on his head in this position,stated prosecutors. Ellis died at the scene while receiving medical aid from paramedics.
