Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. The main administrative block was gutted by fire in September 2020 and the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Tom Mboya was a well-known trade unionist, educationist, Pan Africanist, author, and a Cabinet Minister in Kenyas first post-independence Government. She is also the former First Lady of Nairobi County, Kenya's largest county and the capital city and economic centre of Kenya. Susan holds a number of board positions including the Chair of Liberty Group, a publicly traded company in the nairobi stock exchange. Susan is the Founder of the Zawadi Africa Educational Fund, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides scholarships and leadership development training to academically gifted, marginalized African girls to enable them to attend top colleges and universities around the world with the objective of creating a pipeline of African female leaders. The Zawadi Africa program is based on the Africa Student Airlifts program launched by her father and President John F. Kennedy in 1959 that enabled several participants including Barack Obama Sr, father of President Barack Obama, and Professor Wangari Mathaai to study in the U.S.
Mary Jossy Nakhanda Okwakol is a Ugandan university professor, academic administrator, zoologist and community leader. She is the current chairperson of the Uganda National Examinations Board.

Nadine Byarugaba, is a Ugandan businesswoman, and management consultant. She is the current chairperson of the board of directors of Absa Bank Uganda Limited, effective 28 July 2020. Before that, from September 2019, she served on the same board, as chairperson in acting capacity, replacing Swithin Munyantwali, who was appointed non-executive director to the board of Absa Group Limited.
Thelma Awori is a Ugandan professor, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, and feminist. She was born on March 25, 1943, in Monrovia, Liberia and came to Uganda in 1965. She is a former Uganda People's Congress diehard, who defected to the Movement. She is an individual African feminist who believes in justice for women and the validity of women’s perspectives. She sadly found an extremely high prevalence of internalized oppression due to religion and socialization.
Rose Mwebaza is a Ugandan lawyer who serves as the United Nations Environment Program's regional office for Africa since 2023. She is the Director of the Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN), the implementation arm of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Technology Mechanism, which is hosted and managed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the UN Environment Programme. Mwebaza also serves as the Advisory Board Secretary UNFCCC.
Winifred Mary Tarinyeba Kiryabwire, , is a Ugandan lawyer, academic and businesswoman who is the chairperson of DFCU Bank, a large commercial bank in that East African country. She was appointed to that position effective 1 April 2022.
