Edmond Clint Fernandes is an Indian physician and the founder and CEO of CHD Group [1] He has previously served as a consultant with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok. [2]
Fernandes was born in Niddodi, Mangalore. He completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School, Matunga. He earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Father Muller Medical College, [3] and later completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Community Medicine at Yenepoya University. [4] [5] During his medical studies, he served as the chief editor of the student magazine Mullerpulse at Father Muller Medical College. [6]
Dr. Fernandes has worked in multiple humanitarian emergencies such as Typhoon Haiyaan in the Philippines and also in Cyclone Fani, Kerala Floods etc providing medical relief, care and post disaster epidemiological interventions. [7] [8] He has advocated for a ban on doctor's white coats to prevent hospital acquired infections [9] and also advocated to regulate work hours of resident doctors to reduce preventable deaths, [10] and requested the Health Secretary to Government of India to remove the mandatory retirement age for doctors to plug shortages. [11] To combat rising heart attacks among population groups, he advised people to keep 300mg aspirin in their pockets always and to take the pill when they develop severe chest pain. [12] [13] [14] In 2017, he spoke at the United Nations Regional Hub in Bangkok on how South–South cooperation at the ASEAN level can create a new world order in strengthening international development. [15] He has addressed various public health issues such as mental health, [16] food security [17] climate goals [18] .
Fernandes demonstrated proof of concept to end malnutrition in India[ when? ] through a pilot project in Yelburga, Karnataka. [19] He co-founded Mission ICU. [20] Dr. Fernandes led the implementation of the seat belt policy for road safety in Mangalore [ vague ] in the year 2015. [21]
