Edmund Edel was a 19th-century German painter, illustrator, draughtsman, and writer. [1]
Edel was born on 10 September 1863 in Stolp, Germany, (today Słupsk, Poland.) He received his artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich and the Académie Julian in Paris. [1]
After his studies, Edel settled in Berlin where he specialized in painting and illustration. His work was primarily featured in humorous reviews, and he gained a reputation for his distinctive poster art. [1]

He was a two-time winner of the National Book Award and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964.

Plakatstil, also known as Sachplakat, was an early style of poster art that originated in Germany in the 1900s. It was started by Lucian Bernhard of Berlin in 1906. The common characteristics of this style are bold eye-catching lettering with flat colors. Shapes and objects are simplified, and the composition focuses on a central object. Plakatstil turned away from the complexity of Art Nouveau and propagated a more modern outlook on poster art. Famous Plakatstil artists include Ludwig Hohlwein, Edmund Edel, Ernst Deutsch-Dryden, Hans Lindenstadt, Julius Klinger, Julius Gipkens, Paul Scheurich, Karl Schulpig and Hans Rudi Erdt. The New York Edition of Henry James' fiction was a 24-volume collection of the Anglo-American writer's novels, novellas and short stories, originally published in the U.S. and the UK between 1907 and 1909, with a photogravure frontispiece for each volume by Alvin Langdon Coburn. Two more volumes containing James' unfinished novels, The Ivory Tower and The Sense of the Past, were issued in 1917 in a format consistent with the original set. The entire collection was republished during the 1960s by Charles Scribner's Sons. The official title of the set was The Novels and Tales of Henry James, though the more informal title was suggested by James himself and appears as a subtitle on the series title page in each volume. It has been used almost exclusively by subsequent commentators.
