Edward Lowe Martin (born March 12,1842),was an American politician who served as the Mayor of Kansas City,Missouri. The town of Martin City was named in honor of him;and would eventually be incorporated into and become a neighborhood of Kansas City in 1963.
Edward Lowe Martin was born in Maysville,Kentucky,on March 12,1842,to parents William Martin and Margaret Sheridan Martin. Edward's parents emigrated to Kentucky from Belfast,Ireland in 1822. Edward was educated in private schools in Kentucky until age 16,when he began working in the field of business.
Edward Martin began his business career at age 16 as a shipping clerk for a wholesale grocery house. When the Civil War broke out in 1861,Martin was placed in charge of the business when the owner was jailed as a Confederate sympathizer. Martin liquidated the business and returned the proceeds to the family of the owner. Martin's next occupation was that of head bookkeeper at the largest hardware store in his region of Kentucky. He remained in that position until 1864,when he resigned and moved to a similar position at a large wholesale grocery company in Cincinnati,Ohio. After a year,Martin became a partner in the business and remained there until 1868.
In 1868 Martin moved to Kansas City,Missouri,where he was the head of the E. L. Martin &Company wholesale liquor business and organized the Kansas City Distilling Company.
He became mayor of Kansas City,Missouri,in 1873. Martin was also active in the Board of Education in which he served from 1875 to 1896.
Edward Lowe Martin is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Kansas City.

Abraham Owen Smoot was an American pioneer,businessman,religious leader,and politician. He spent his early life in the Southern United States and was one of seven children. After being baptized a member of the Church of Christ,predecessor to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,Smoot served as a missionary in Kentucky,Tennessee,South Carolina,and England. He received no formal education,but learned to read as a child and later attended the School of the Prophets in Kirtland,Ohio. Like other early members of the LDS Church,Smoot practiced plural marriage,eventually marrying six women and having 24 children. After migrating west to Utah Territory,he was elected as the second mayor of Salt Lake City and maintained this position from 1857 to 1866. He was then assigned by Brigham Young to move to Provo,where he served as stake president and mayor from 1868 to 1881. He assisted financially in the construction of the Provo Tabernacle—today the Provo City Center Temple—as well as that of the Utah Southern Railroad. Smoot was the first president of the board of trustees of Brigham Young Academy (BYA)—which later developed into Brigham Young University (BYU). He was an early financial supporter of the institution and was nicknamed the "foster father" of the Academy. His goal was to make education available to young Latter-day Saints. Today,the Smoot Administration Building at BYU is named after him.
William Warner was an American lawyer and politician based in Kansas City,Missouri. He became mayor of Kansas City in 1871,serving a one year term. He later represented Missouri in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

James Edward Smith was a Canadian businessman and politician who served as the mayor of Toronto. He was born in London,England,and moved to Toronto,Canada,as a child. He operated a grocery business and was involved in real estate and insurance. He was elected to the Toronto City Council in 1857,and the council elected Smith as the city's mayor in 1867. He oversaw the Canadian Confederation celebrations and was reelected in 1868. He did not want to be considered for a third term,but remained on the council until 1870. He continued operating his businesses and was a collector of customs at the port of Toronto until a scandal precipitated his retirement in 1879. He died in Toronto on March 9,1892.
