Marine Corps career

Howard enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps September 23, 1941. On November 3, 1942 at Guadalcanal, Corporal Howard was in charge of a communication wire team trying to reestablish vital lines to the rear under enemy fire.

Awarded the Silver Star

For his gallantry in this action in which he lost his life trying to move a wounded comrade to safety, he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.

Namesake

USS Edwin A. Howard (DE-346) was named in his honor. She was launched January 25, 1944 by Consolidated Steel Corp., Ltd., Orange, Texas; sponsored by Mrs. Julia W. Howard, mother of Corporal Howard; and commissioned May 25, 1944, Lieutenant Commander F. Denfield, USNR, in command.

Samuel Horwitz, known professionally as Shemp Howard, was an American actor and comedian. He was called "Shemp" because "Sam" came out that way in his mother's thick Litvak accent. He is best-known as the third Stooge in the Three Stooges, a role he played when the act began in the early 1920s (1923–1932), while it was still associated with Ted Healy and known as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; and again from 1946 until his death in 1955. During the fourteen years between his times with the Stooges, he had a successful solo career as a film comedian, including series of shorts by himself and with partners, and reluctantly returned to the Stooges as a favor to his brothers Moe and Curly.

John Howard (British Army officer)

Major (Reginald) John Howard DSO was a British Army officer who led a glider-borne assault on two bridges between Bénouville and Ranville in Normandy, France, codenamed Operation Deadstick, on 6 June 1944 as part of the D-Day landings during the Second World War. These bridges spanned the Caen Canal and the adjacent River Orne, and were vitally important to the success of the D-Day landings. Since the war the bridge over the canal has become known as "Pegasus Bridge", as a tribute to the men who captured it, while the bridge over the River Orne later became known as Horsa Bridge after the Horsa gliders that had carried the troops to the bridges.

Remi August Balduck, enlisted in the Marine Corps at Detroit on September 4, 1940 and commenced recruit training at Parris Island, S.C., two days later. Reassigned to the Marine Barracks at New River, N.C., on September 28, 1941, Balduck was ultimately assigned to the 7th Marine Regiment, Ist Marine Division, and sailed for the South Pacific on May 8, 1942.

Edwin C. "Babe" Horrell was an American football player and coach. He played college football at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was an All-American in 1924 at center. Horrell served as the head football coach at the University of California, Los Angeles from 1939 to 1944, compiling a record of 24–31–6. In 1942, he led the UCLA Bruins to the Pacific Coast Conference title and an appearance in the Rose Bowl. Horrell was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1969.
