Eero Antero Mäntyranta was one of the most successful Finnish cross-country skiers. He competed in four Winter Olympics (1960–1972) winning seven medals at three of them. His performance at the 1964 Winter Olympics earned him the nickname "Mister Seefeld", referring to the venue where the cross-country skiing and biathlon competitions took place. The Finnish Ministry of Education endowed him with the Pro Urheilu letter of recognition in 2000. There is also a museum centered on Mäntyranta in his birthplace of Pello.

Eero Johannes Kolehmainen was a Finnish cross-country skier. He competed in the 50 km event at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and won a silver medal in 1952, placing fourth in 1956. In 1957, aged 39, he won the 50 km races at the Holmenkollen ski festival and Lahti Ski Games. The same year, he was awarded the Holmenkollen medal. Kolehmainen's best finish at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships was fifth over 50 km in 1958. He was a farmer by occupation.

Säkkijärven polkka is a well-known folk tune from Finland that is very popular with Finnish accordionists. It was popularized by Viljo "Vili" Vesterinen (1907–1961). The first record of the existence of the tune is from Säkkijärvi (now Kondrat'evo in the Leningrad Oblast. Most famous and historical is the recording made on June 17, 1939 with former members of the Dallapé Orchestra. The recording took place in the ballroom of the German school in Helsinki. The recording became not only the savior of Viipuri, but also the most famous performance of all time of the Säkkijärvi polkka.

Manu Juhani Tamminen is a Finnish retired professional ice hockey player who played in the SM-liiga and World Hockey Association. He played for TPS, HJK, HIFK, Cleveland Crusaders, and Phoenix Roadrunners. He represented Finland at the 1976 Canada Cup. He was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.

Taavi Tamminen was a Greco-Roman wrestler from Finland. He won a silver Olympic medal in 1920, losing in the final to his clubmate Emil Väre, a world title in 1921, and a national title in 1922. After retiring from competitions he worked as a wrestling referee and masseur, attending the 1936 Summer Olympics with the Finnish team.
