Alex Ekwueme Square, [1] [2] widely known as Ekwueme Square, is the main square in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Nigeria. It is located beside Anambra State House of Assembly's Complex and adjacent Federal High Court, Awka. It is named after Nigeria's first civilian Vice President, Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme. It has access roads leading to Anambra State Secretariat.
Ekwueme Square is used as the main venue for the Independence Day parade and the Swearing-in Ceremony of the Executive Governor of Anambra state. [3] Since its completion, it has also hosted a number of political rallies, religious programmes, musical concerts, award ceremonies and sports events. [4]

Anambra State is a Nigerian state, located in the southeastern region of the country. The state was created on 27 August 1991. Chris Nwabueze Ngige is a Nigerian politician and medical doctor who served as minister of Labour and Employment of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari's administration from 2015 to 2023. He was elected Senator for Anambra Central Constituency in April 2011. He was the governor of Anambra State in Nigeria from May 2003 to March 2006 under the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, also called UNIZIK or NAU in short is a federal university in Nigeria. It consists of two campuses in Anambra State. Its main campus is in Awka, while its other campus is in Nnewi. There are also other campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. These include Agulu in Aniocha local government area and Ifite-Ogwuari in Ayamelum local government area in Anambra State. This makes Nnamdi Azikiwe University to operate in the three Senatorial Districts in Anambra State, Nigeria having Awka campus, in Anambra Central Senatorial District, Nnewi in Anambra North Senatorial District and Ifite-Ogwuari in Anambra North Senatorial District, respectively.
Alexander Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme was a Nigerian politician who served as the first elected vice president of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983 during the Second Nigerian Republic under President Shehu Shagari as a member of the National Party of Nigeria.
Awka'Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) is made up of nine towns, namely, Amawbia, Awka, Ezinato, Isiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise, Okpuno and Umuawulu. Paul University, Awka (PUA) is located in Awka, Anambra State in Nigeria. It is a private Christian University. It was founded in 2009 by Bishops of the five ecclesiastical provinces of the Anglican Church East of the Niger to provide undergraduate training in Arts, Natural and Applied Sciences, Social Sciences and Management. The university which is fully residential has an estimated enrollment of around 400 students and has replaced St Paul's University College which was founded in 1904 by the Church Missionary Society of the Church of England to train church workers and teachers. Although, Paul University Awka is a Private University, the Anambra State government under Governor Peter Obi donated cash and vehicles for its infrastructural upgrade and development.
Amawbia is a town in Awka South Local Government of Anambra State, Nigeria. The town has six surviving villages: Umueze, Ngene, Adabebe, Umukabia, Ezimezi and Enu-oji. From time immemorial, Amawbia had been an autonomous community, managing its own affairs. Beginning from 1905, Amawbia had been the seat of government for the former Awka District, the former Njikoka Local Government, and presently, Awka Local Government. Amawbia is also home to the state house i.e. Governor's lodge and the State Prisons, Amawbia is known as the land of great farmers and hunters Amawbia (Amaobia) meaning they don't know visitors they treat everyone as equal.
Ekwulobia Prison is a federal medium security prison sited closely to the former vice President Alex Ekwueme's Oko Community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The prison which was the only infrastructure given to the Ekwulobia community during the Shagari era in the second republic, has an operational housing capacity of 85 inmates.
