Doctor Ela Lodh (also spelt as Ila Lodh, died 2021 at 79 [1] ) was an Indian obstetrician and gynaecologist. She received the 2020 Nari Shakti Puraskar posthumously on 8 March 2022. [2] [3] [4]

Career

Ela Lodh was born in Khowai in the Indian state of Tripura. [5] Qualified as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, she worked for the Tripura Health Service, eventually becoming administrative director. [2] She held the post from 1990 until 2000 and was also the founder of the Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura. [6] [3] She died of cardiac arrest in a private hospital in Kolkata on 19 July 2021. [7]

Awards and recognition

Lodh received the 2020 Nari Shakti Puraskar posthumously on 8 March 2022. Her son received the award on her behalf from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. [8]

Nasira Akhter is an Indian inventor from Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir. She dropped out of school and became interested in the uses of herbs. Akhter worked at the Kashmir University Science Instrumentation Centre for over eight years to develop a means to make polythene biodegradable. She found a solution using an undisclosed herb in 2008. The herb is made into a paste and this is applied to the polythene before it is set alight. The polythene is disposed of without any reported pollution. In recognition of her achievements, she received the Nari Shakti Puraskar on International Women's Day 2022 from the President of India Ram Nath Kovind.
