Elaine O'Connor (born 20 February 1982) is an Irish former football midfielder. O'Connor played for clubs including Arsenal and Long Island Lady Riders and represented the Republic of Ireland at senior international level.

Club career

O'Connor took up football aged seven and played for five years at Killinarden Community School. [2] She came to prominence at Dublin Women's Soccer League club Lourdes Celtic, winning the Dublin Cup at Under-14, 16 and 18 level. [3] Spells at other Dublin clubs Shelbourne and St Catherine's followed for O'Connor. [4]

In 1999 an American soccer coach named JoAnne Wagner spotted O'Connor and signed her to Hofstra University. [5] O'Connor remained for five seasons, redshirting in 2002, and majoring in Physical Education. She also featured in the W-League for Long Island Lady Riders. [2]

In 2004 O'Connor signed for Arsenal Ladies, making her debut in an FA Women's Community Shield defeat by Charlton Athletic. [6] By 2005 O'Connor was back in America playing for Long Island Lady Riders. [7] The following season she switched to Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) outfit Long Island Fury. [8] [9]

After her playing career O'Connor remained in the United States and worked as a teacher. [10]

International career

O'Connor represented Republic of Ireland at youth level, [4] then played for the senior team in the qualifying campaigns for the 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women's World Cups. [1] She also played in the Euro 2009 qualifiers. [11]

O'Connor was named Women's Senior International Player of the Year at the 2004 FAI International Football Awards. [12] She won 54 caps for Ireland. [10]

The Rough Riders were an original member of the USL W-League and played in all 21 seasons before the league disbanded in late 2015. The team was a member of United Women's Soccer from 2016-2021. They now play in the second version of the USL W League.

Marie Claire Curtin is a former professional footballer who played for Republic of Ireland women's national football team. Curtin played for several clubs in the Women's National League, including Cork Women's F.C., Galway, Limerick and most recently Treaty United. She has also represented UCD in Europe. Curtin has also played at a semi-professional level for Long Island Fury in the Women's Premier Soccer League and for Fortuna Ålesund in the Norwegian First Division. Curtin has also played senior Ladies' Gaelic football for Limerick. In 2013 Curtin and her father, Sean, co-founded a dairy foods company, Temple Dairy Ltd. Curtin retired from football in January 2021.

Killeen has also played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Dublin.

Dundalk City Ladies Football Club was an Irish association football club based in Dundalk, County Louth. During the early 2000s they were the "sister club" of Dundalk F.C. However, after winning the 2005 FAI Women's Cup and qualifying for the 2006–07 UEFA Women's Cup, the club split into two separate teams. Dundalk City was re-established as an independent club while Dundalk W.F.C. became affiliated to the League of Ireland club and went on to compete in the UEFA Women's Cup.

Sarah Rowe is a triple code sportswoman. She is a former Republic of Ireland women's association football international. In addition to association football, Rowe has also played two other football codes at a senior level. She has played ladies' Gaelic football for Mayo and women's Australian rules football for Collingwood in the AFLW. At club level, Rowe has played association football for Castlebar Celtic, Raheny United, Shelbourne, Bohemians in the Women's National League and for Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women. Rowe was a member of the Republic of Ireland U19 team that won their group at the 2014 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and qualified for the semi-finals. In 2016, she was also a member of the Shelbourne Ladies team that won a Women's National League/FAI Women's Cup double. At club level she has previously played for Shelbourne, UCD Waves and Peamount United in her home country, as well as for Girondins de Bordeaux in France and Charlton Athletic in England.
