Julie-Ann Russell (born 28 March 1991) is an Irish retired [3] footballer who played for Women's National League club Galway United W.F.C. [4]

In 2014, Russell was voted both FAI Senior Women's International Player of the Year and the Women's National League Senior Player of the Year. Russell has played in three FAI Women's Cup finals for three different teams – the Galway Ladies League, Salthill Devon and UCD Waves. Russell has also played ladies' Gaelic football at a senior level for both Galway and Connacht.

Early years

Russell grew up in Moycullen, County Galway where she attended Scoil Mhuire Maigh Cuilinn. Her older brother, John is also an association footballer and plays in the League of Ireland. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

Club career

Salthill Devon

In 2007, together with Dora Gorman, Russell was a member of the Salthill Devon team that won the Under 16 Girls FAI Cup. In the final at Tolka Park, Russell scored the winner in a 3–2 extra–time win over Stella Maris. [10] The following week, together with several Salthill Devon teammates including Niamh Fahey and Méabh De Búrca, Russell helped the Galway Ladies League win the 2007 FAI Women's Cup, defeating Raheny United 1–0 at Dalymount Park. [9] [11] [12] Russell subsequently played for Galway in the 2008–09 UEFA Women's Cup. [13] In 2010 Russell played in her second FAI Women's Cup final, this time with Salthill Devon who lost 4–2 to Peamount United. [14] [15] As well as playing for Salthill Devon, Russell and several of her teammates, including Dora Gorman, also played Gaelic football for Galway in the Ladies' National Football League. [16] Russell also played for Connacht at interprovincial level. [17]

University of Limerick

Between 2009 and 2013 Russell attended the Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick where she gained a Business Studies and Marketing, 1st Class Honours degree. [8] [18] Together with Karen Duggan, Russell also played for the UL association football team that won the 2010 WSCAI Intervarsities Cup. They defeated a UCD team that featured Louise Quinn 2–1 in the final at Turners Cross. Duggan and Russell also helped the team win the WSCAI Premier Division in 2010–11. [19] [20] They also played for the UL ladies futsal team that won the 2011 WSCAI National Futsal Intervarsities title. [21] In 2011 Russell played for Los Angeles Strikers in the USL W-League, forming a strike partnership with Cherelle Khassal. [18] [22] In 2012 Russell completed a nine-month internship with Doncaster Rovers Belles in the FA WSL, fulfilling the work placement element of her UL degree. In addition to playing for Belles, she also worked for Doncaster Rovers F.C. in their marketing department as a digital ambassador. Russell was appointed as one of several FA WSL digital media ambassadors who wore their Twitter account name on their shirt sleeves to raise the profile of the league. [6] [18] [23] [24] [25]

Peamount United

Russell, along with fellow UL student Karen Duggan, began playing for Peamount United in August 2011 and subsequently played for the club in their 2011–12 UEFA Women's Champions League campaign and during the inaugural 2011–12 Women's National League season. Russell also helped United win the WNL Cup in 2012–13. [1] [11] [26] While playing for United, Russell was twice selected for the WNL Team of the Season in 2012–13 and 2013–14. In the latter season she was also named Senior Player of the Year. [27] [28] [29]

UCD Waves

Between 2013 and 2014 Russell attended the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at University College Dublin where she achieved an Honours master's degree in marketing. [18] Russell also played association football for UCD at intervarsity level, playing in teams alongside Dora Gorman, Siobhán Killeen and Ciara Grant. [30] During the 2013–14 season Russell helped UCD win the WSCAI Futsal Cup and the WSCAI Premier Division. [31] [32] [33] In 2014–15 when UCD Waves entered a team in the Women's National League, they also appointed the former Peamount United manager Eileen Gleeson to take charge of the team. Russell was one of several United players to follow Gleeson to Waves. Others included Aine O'Gorman, Karen Duggan, Dora Gorman, Chloe Mustaki and Emily Cahill. [34] In 2015 Russell also started working as a Bing ads account manager for Microsoft. [18] [35]

In December 2020, Russell joined W-League club Western Sydney Wanderers. [36]

International career

Russell has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-15, under-17, under-19, university and senior level. [15] [18] In December 2011, together with Dora Gorman, Megan Campbell, Ciara Grant, Louise Quinn, Grace Murray and Karen Duggan, Russell was included in an FAI scholarship programme for potential senior women's internationals. [37] Russell made her senior international debut on 29 October 2009, when she came on as a half–time substitute for Marie Curtin during a 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan. She created the Republic of Ireland's equalising goal in their 2–1 win. [38] She has subsequently represented the Republic of Ireland during their UEFA Women's Euro 2013, 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and UEFA Women's Euro 2017 qualifying campaigns. [11] Russell also represented the Republic of Ireland at the 2012 Algarve Cup [39] and in Cyprus Cup tournaments. Russell also represented Ireland at the 2013 and 2015 Summer Universiades. Peamount United Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Newcastle, South Dublin. The club is best known for its senior women's team, founder members and inaugural champions of the Women's National League in 2011–12. They have also represented the Republic of Ireland in Europe and in 2011–12 they became the first Republic of Ireland team, including men's teams, to qualify from their group for the knockout stages of a European competition. The club's senior men's team compete in the Leinster Senior League. Peamount United have also fielded teams in the Dublin Women's Soccer League, the Dublin and District Schoolboys League and the Metropolitan Girls league.

The League of Ireland Women's Premier Division is a professional women's association football league in the Republic of Ireland, organised by the League of Ireland, which began play in the 2023 season. The league consists of eleven teams, eight of which owned by clubs with men's teams in the League of Ireland's Premier Division or First Division. The winners of the league qualify for the first round of the UEFA Women's Champions League in the following season.

The most notable county league is the Dublin Women's Soccer League. Organised women's association football has been played in the Republic of Ireland since at least the late 1960s and the national team has been active since 1973. Dora Gorman is an Irish radiologist and footballer who plays as a midfielder for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL). In 2010, she was captain of the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad who were runners-up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship and quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. As well as being a medical doctor, Gorman is an all-round sportswoman. She has also represented the Ireland women's national field hockey team at various levels and has played senior inter-county ladies' Gaelic football for the Galway county team.

Sylvia Gee is a former Republic of Ireland women's international footballer who has spent the majority of her career playing in various women's association football leagues in the Republic of Ireland and the United States. Between 2003 and 2007, Gee was a prominent member and captain of the successful UCD team which qualified for the UEFA Women's Cup on three successive occasions.

Ciara Grant is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Hibernian of the Scottish Women's Premier League and for the Republic of Ireland national team. Grant has previously played for Raheny United, UCD Waves and Shelbourne of the Women's National League, and for Women's Premiership club Sion Swifts. Immediately prior to joining Hearts, Grant played for Rangers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">UCD Women's Soccer Club</span> Football club

UCD Women's Soccer Club is an Irish association football club based in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. It is the women's association football team of University College Dublin. Founded in 1966, UCD are one of the oldest women's football clubs in the Republic of Ireland. Like the UCD men's team, the women's football team has competed in national competitions, such as the FAI Women's Cup and the Women's National League, as well as intervarsity competitions. UCD has also represented the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Women's Cup. Between 2014 and 2018, following a merger, with DLR Waves, the club played in the Women's National League and FAI Women's Cup as UCD Waves. However, in 2018 UCD withdrew from the WNL. DLR Waves was subsequently revived as a separate club, taking UCD Waves' place in the WNL.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Galway W.F.C.</span> Football club

Galway Football Club was an Irish association football club based in Galway. It is the women's section of the League of Ireland club Galway United. Since 2013–14 the club played in the Women's National League (WNL) and did so as Galway WFC until 2022. Throughout its existence the club has been closely associated with both the Galway Ladies League and the Galway Football Association. The WNL team had its origins in the Galway Ladies League representative team that won the 2007 FAI Women's Cup and then represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2008–09 UEFA Women's Cup. The Galway Ladies League and its member clubs, such as Salthill Devon, Galway Bohemians, Corrib Celtic, Colga F.C. and NUI Galway, served as a feeder system for Galway WFC.

The Dublin Women's Soccer League was a women's association football league featuring teams from the Republic of Ireland. While the majority of the participating clubs were based in the Greater Dublin Area, the DWSL had regularly included teams from outside this area. Whilst previously the DWSL was one of the largest women's leagues in Ireland it had been overtaken by the Wexford, MGL and Cork Leagues. In late 2019, the FAI following discussions revamped Women's Football in the Greater Dublin area and the Eastern Women's Football League (EWFL) chaired by the MGL's Tony Gains were granted the only license to run women's adult football in the Dublin area. The EWFL is run by committees of the MGL and the former DWSL.

Wexford FC Women's Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Crossabeg, County Wexford. Their senior team plays in the Women's National League. In the course of women's football in Ireland, Wexford have steadily been one of the league's strongest teams.

The 2013–14 Women's National League was the third season of the Women's National League. This was the final season the league was sponsored by Bus Éireann. In June 2013 the Football Association of Ireland announced Galway W.F.C. as an expansion team for the upcoming season. Raheny United won their second WNL title and also win the 2013 FAI Women's Cup. Meanwhile, Wexford Youths won their first trophy, the 2014 WNL Cup, with a 3–0 over Castlebar Celtic. Julie-Ann Russell of Peamount United was named 2013–14 Player of the Season.

The 2015–16 Women's National League was the fifth season of the Women's National League. Two new clubs joined the league before the start of the season, restoring the number of teams in the league to eight. Kilkenny United were formed as expansion team while Raheny United's senior women's team merged with Shelbourne Ladies. This effectively saw Shelbourne Ladies takeover Raheny United's place in the WNL. The season also saw the introduction of the WNL Shield. Wexford Youths and Shelbourne Ladies finished the season as the league's two strongest teams. In the league itself, the two teams finished level on points before Wexford Youths retained the title after a play-off. Wexford Youths also completed a treble, having already won both the FAI Women's Cup and WNL Shield. Shelbourne Ladies were also runners up in the WNL Shield before going onto win the WNL Cup. Before the season was finished Castlebar Celtic withdrew because they were unable to field a team.

Karen Duggan is an Irish footballer who plays for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL). She has previously played for UCD Waves and the Republic of Ireland women's national football team. Between 2013 and 2016 Duggan was selected for the WNL Team of the Season for four successive seasons. She was the only player selected all four seasons. In 2015–16 she was also WNL Senior Player of the Season. Duggan has also played camogie at club, university and county level.

Siobhán Killeen is a Republic of Ireland women's international footballer. She has also played for UCD, Raheny United and Shelbourne Ladies. In 2010, she was a member of the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad that were runners-up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship and quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. Killeen has also played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Dublin.

Eileen Gleeson is an Irish association football manager who was most recently head coach of the Republic of Ireland women's team. She has also held the role of the Football Association of Ireland's (FAI) Head of Women and Girls Football, as well as being Assistant Coach to Vera Pauw with the Ireland women’s team. At club level, Gleeson has coached Glasgow City of the Scottish Women's Premier League and Women's National League (Ireland) sides UCD Waves and Peamount United, who she guided to the last 32 of the 2011–12 UEFA Women's Champions League.

Noelle Murray is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a forward for Irish club Shelbourne and the Republic of Ireland national team. Between 2011 and 2016 Murray played in six successive FAI Women's Cup finals with three clubs - St Catherine's, Raheny United and Shelbourne Ladies.

Dearbháile Beirne is an Irish dual code footballer from Mohill in County Leitrim. In soccer she plays for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL) and has represented the Republic of Ireland women's national football team at youth and senior level. She has also played Ladies' Gaelic football for Leitrim GAA, competing in the Ladies' National Football League and All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies' Football Championship.
