Stella Maris Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Drumcondra, Dublin. Founded in 1943, the club caters for over 350 children, ranging in age from 5 to 18 years. Some thirty coaches and managers train, organise and oversee the teams and academy run by the club. The club enters several teams in the Dublin & District Schoolboy League and the Leinster Senior League. Stella Maris is best known for its youth system which has successfully produced dozens of players who have gone on to play for clubs throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom. Many have also gone on to represent the Republic of Ireland at international level. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

History

Moore and Whelan

One of Stella Maris' earliest coaches was Paddy Moore. During the 1940s and early 1950s, when Moore coached Stella Maris, he nurtured the talents of future Republic of Ireland international Ronnie Whelan Sr. Whelan was initially "discovered" by Moore's wife, who then brought him to the attention of her husband. Whelan was one of the early success stories of the Stella Maris academy. [6]

Milk Cup

Stella Maris have been regular participants in the Milk Cup, playing against the youth teams of among others, Feyenoord, Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough as well as national youth teams representing Wales, Estonia and Slovakia. On 27 July 1994, Glen Crowe scored a hat-trick as Stella Maris defeated Estonia 8–0 in a Milk Cup game. [7]

Women's teams

Stella Maris has also fielded women's teams in both the Dublin Women's Soccer League and the FAI Women's Cup. [8] [9] Republic of Ireland women's internationals Stephanie Roche and Áine O'Gorman are both former Stella Maris players. [10]

Home ground

In May 2014, Stella Maris opened a new clubhouse and a new 3G pitch at their base at Richmond Road. The facilities were officially opened by two former players, Johnny Giles and Eamon Dunphy, who were joined at the opening ceremony by Football Association of Ireland (FAI) chief John Delaney. [11] Stella Maris also play matches at a number of local pitches based at Clonturk Park and Albert College Park. [12]

Michael John Giles is an Irish former association football player and manager best remembered for his time as a midfielder with Leeds United in the 1960s and 1970s. After retiring from management in 1985, Giles served as the senior analyst on RTÉ Sport's coverage of association football from 1986 until 2016. The FAI voted Giles as the greatest Irish player of the last 50 years at the UEFA Jubilee Awards in 2004.

Patrick "Pat" Dunne was an Irish professional football goalkeeper. He played internationally for the Republic of Ireland and professionally in both Republic of Ireland and England.

Brian Mooney, is an Irish former footballer who made his name as a skilful winger in English football. Mooney was spotted in 1983 by Liverpool playing for Irish schoolboy club Home Farm F.C. where he had won a FAI Youth Cup. He went to school at St. Joseph's C.B.S. in Fairview.

Ronnie Whelan Sr. was a Republic of Ireland international footballer, who played for several clubs, most notably St. Patrick's Athletic. He is the father of Ronnie Jr. Another son, Paul, and a grandson, Gavin, were also League of Ireland players. Whelan died in July 1993 at the age of 56 from stomach cancer.

Paddy Moore was an Irish professional footballer who played for, among others, Shamrock Rovers and Aberdeen. Moore was a dual internationalist and played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI.

After a moderately successful career in the English League, Bacuzzi settled in the Republic of Ireland where he enjoyed a successful spell as player-manager with Cork Hibernians before going on to manage Home Farm. He later opened a travel agency in Dublin.

John Keogh is an Irish former professional football player who played as a full back in the 1960s.

The FAI Youth Cup, also known as the FAI Umbro Youth Challenge Cup, is a cup competition organised by the FAI for youth association football clubs and teams in the Republic of Ireland. The inaugural winners were Greenmount Rangers. The competition's most successful club has been Home Farm who have won the cup eleven times. They have also been finalists on a further seven occasions. In 1964–65 a Home Farm A team, featuring Terry Conroy and Billy Newman, played a Home Farm B team in the final at Tolka Park. The cup is currently sponsored by Umbro.

Dora Gorman is an Irish radiologist and footballer who plays as a midfielder for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL). In 2010, she was captain of the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad who were runners-up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship and quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. As well as being a medical doctor, Gorman is an all-round sportswoman. She has also represented the Ireland women's national field hockey team at various levels and has played senior inter-county ladies' Gaelic football for the Galway county team.

Frankfort Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Raheny, Dublin. In the 1921–22 League of Ireland, they were founding members of the League of Ireland. Today they still remain an active junior club fielding teams in various local Dublin leagues such as the Athletic Union League, the United Churches Football League, the Amateur Football League, and the North Dublin Schoolboys/Girls League. The club has been managed by the O'Connor family since it was formed in 1900. Current chairman, David O'Connor, took control of the club in 1999.

Belvedere Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Fairview/Clontarf, Dublin. Belvedere currently fields teams in the Dublin & District Schoolboy League. The club has also entered teams in the FAI Youth Cup, the FAI Under-17 Cup, the Milk Cup and the Umbro Galway Cup. Like Home Farm, Stella Maris and Cherry Orchard, Belvedere is well known for its youth system which has successfully produced hundreds of players who have gone onto play & coach for professional clubs throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom and worldwide. In addition hundreds have also gone on to represent the Republic of Ireland at various international levels & to date the club have 15 full internationals.

Emily Whelan is an Irish footballer who plays for Scottish Women's Premier League club Glasgow City and the Republic of Ireland women's national football team. She is a former Gaelic footballer.
