Marie Claire Curtin (born 7 August 1985) is a former professional footballer who played for Republic of Ireland women's national football team. Curtin played for several clubs in the Women's National League, including Cork Women's F.C., Galway, Limerick and most recently Treaty United. She has also represented UCD in Europe. Curtin has also played at a semi-professional level for Long Island Fury in the Women's Premier Soccer League and for Fortuna Ålesund in the Norwegian First Division. Curtin has also played senior Ladies' Gaelic football for Limerick. In 2013 Curtin and her father, Sean, co-founded a dairy foods company, Temple Dairy Ltd. Curtin retired from football in January 2021.

Early years and education

Curtin was raised in County Limerick, near Kilmallock. The Curtin family have run a dairy farm between Banogue and Athlacca since the 1940s and Marie's parents, Sean and Eileen, took over the farm in 1975. She is one of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. She began playing association football on the farm with her siblings and their friends from an early age. Curtin attended Ard Scoil Mhuire in Bruff. Between 2004 and 2008 Curtin attended Hofstra University on a four-year full soccer scholarship where she gained a BA in social sciences. Association football

Lifford Ladies

Throughout her career Curtin played regularly for Ennis-based Lifford Ladies. In 2001 Curtin was named FAI Under-19 Women's International Player of the Year while playing for Lifford. She also made her senior debut for the Republic of Ireland while a Lifford player. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] Marie's sister, Anne Curtin, also played for Lifford Ladies and was a university international. [13] [14] The Curtin sisters helped Lifford Ladies reach the 2003 FAI Women's Cup final which they lost 2–0 to UCD. [15] [16] Marie Curtin subsequently guested for UCD in their 2003–04 UEFA Women's Cup campaign. [17] [18]

Hofstra Pride

Between 2004 and 2008 Curtin attended Hofstra University on a soccer scholarship. [5] Her teammates at Hofstra Pride included fellow Republic of Ireland women's internationals, Diane Caldwell and Edel Malone. [19]

Semi-professional

Curtin has played at a semi-professional level. Between 2005 and 2008, while attending Hofstra University, Curtin also played for Long Island Fury in the Women's Premier Soccer League. [5] [19] On May 20 2005, Curtin scored the first three goals in the team's history, scoring a first half hat-trick as Long Island defeated Northampton Laurels 5–0 as they made their WPSL debut. [20] Curtin had a second spell as a semi-professional when she played for Fortuna Ålesund during the 2012 Norwegian First Division season. [3] [21] [22] [23]

Women's National League

Before the establishment of Women's National League, Curtin was playing junior football with Kilmallock United. In 2010 Curtin helped them reach the FAI Women's Junior Cup final which they lost 1–0 to Bohemians. [24] The inaugural 2011–12 Women's National League season saw Curtin playing for Cork Women's F.C. [25] [26] The 2014–15 season saw Curtin sign for Galway W.F.C. [23] [27] By 2017 Curtin was playing for Aisling-Annacotty in the Limerick Women's & Schoolgirls' Soccer League. [2] [28] In 2018 she made a return to the WNL with Limerick. [29] [30] 2020 saw Curtin play for newly formed Treaty United of the WNL after Limerick were liquidated. She retired from professional football on 11 January 2021.

Republic of Ireland

Curtin has represented the Republic of Ireland at under–16, under–18 and under–19 levels. [17] [9] [12] [31] Between 2000 and 2012 Curtin won 45 caps while representing the senior team. [32] She made her debut for the senior team, aged just 16, in a behind closed doors friendly against Arsenal Ladies. She won her first full senior cap against Greece. [2] Curtin represented the Republic of Ireland in qualifying campaigns for the 2005, 2009 and 2013 UEFA Women's Euros and the 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women's World Cups. Curtin played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Limerick and Mungret St. Pauls. [30] [38] [39] On 26 September 2010 Curtin scored 2-5 and was named player of the match as she helped Limerick defeat Louth in the 2010 All-Ireland Junior Ladies' Football Championship final. [4] [40] [41]

Business woman

In 2013 Curtin and her father, Sean, co-founded a dairy foods company, Temple Dairy Ltd. The company's main product is a healthy chocolate milk drink. Curtin is the company's managing director. In 2010, she was captain of the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad who were runners-up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship and quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. As well as being a medical doctor, Gorman is an all-round sportswoman. She has also represented the Ireland women's national field hockey team at various levels and has played senior inter-county ladies' Gaelic football for the Galway county team.

Shelbourne Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Northside, Dublin. It is the women's section of the League of Ireland club Shelbourne FC. They have also fielded teams in the Dublin Women's Soccer League, the Metropolitan Girls League and the North Dublin Schoolboys/Girls League.

Sylvia Gee is a former Republic of Ireland women's international footballer who has spent the majority of her career playing in various women's association football leagues in the Republic of Ireland and the United States. Between 2003 and 2007, Gee was a prominent member and captain of the successful UCD team which qualified for the UEFA Women's Cup on three successive occasions.

Immediately prior to joining Hearts, Grant played for Rangers.

Nora Stapleton is a former Ireland women's rugby union international. Stapleton represented Ireland at the 2010, 2014 and 2017 Women's Rugby World Cups. She was also a member of the Ireland teams that won the 2013 and 2015 Women's Six Nations Championships. Stapleton was a member of the first Ireland teams to defeat both England and New Zealand. Stapleton has also played two other football codes at a senior level. As a women's association football player, she played for UCD in FAI Women's Cup finals and UEFA Women's Cup campaigns. She has also played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Donegal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">UCD Women's Soccer Club</span> Football club

UCD Women's Soccer Club is an Irish association football club based in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. It is the women's association football team of University College Dublin. Founded in 1966, UCD are one of the oldest women's football clubs in the Republic of Ireland. Like the UCD men's team, the women's football team has competed in national competitions, such as the FAI Women's Cup and the Women's National League, as well as intervarsity competitions. UCD has also represented the Republic of Ireland in the UEFA Women's Cup. Between 2014 and 2018, following a merger, with DLR Waves, the club played in the Women's National League and FAI Women's Cup as UCD Waves. However in 2018 UCD withdrew from the WNL. DLR Waves was subsequently revived as a separate club, taking UCD Waves' place in the WNL.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Galway W.F.C.</span> Football club

Galway United Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Galway. It is the women's section of the League of Ireland club Galway United. Since 2013–14 the club played in the Women's National League (WNL) and did so as Galway WFC until 2022. Throughout its existence the club has been closely associated with both the Galway Ladies League and the Galway Football Association. The WNL team had its origins in the Galway Ladies League representative team that won the 2007 FAI Women's Cup and then represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2008–09 UEFA Women's Cup. The Galway Ladies League and its member clubs, such as Salthill Devon, Galway Bohemians, Corrib Celtic, Colga F.C. and NUI Galway, served as a feeder system for Galway WFC.

The Dublin Women's Soccer League was a women's association football league featuring teams from the Republic of Ireland. While the majority of the participating clubs were based in the Greater Dublin Area, the DWSL had regularly included teams from outside this area. Whilst previously the DWSL was one of the largest women's leagues in Ireland it had been overtaken by the Wexford, MGL and Cork Leagues. In late 2019, the FAI following discussions revamped Women's Football in the Greater Dublin area and the Eastern Women's Football League (EWFL) chaired by the MGL's Tony Gains were granted the only license to run women's adult football in the Dublin area. The EWFL is run by committees of the MGL and the former DWSL.

Karen Duggan is an Irish footballer who plays for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL). She has previously played for UCD Waves and the Republic of Ireland women's national football team. Between 2013 and 2016 Duggan was selected for the WNL Team of the Season for four successive seasons. She was the only player selected all four seasons. In 2015–16 she was also WNL Senior Player of the Season. Duggan has also played camogie at club, university and county level.

Siobhán Killeen is a Republic of Ireland women's international footballer. She has also played for UCD, Raheny United and Shelbourne Ladies. In 2010, she was a member of the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad that were runners-up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship and quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. Killeen has also played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Dublin.

St Catherine's Ladies Football Club is an Irish association football club originally based in St Catherine's Parish in the Liberties, Dublin. The club also plays home games in Walkinstown. St Catherine's have been FAI Women's Cup finalists on three occasions, winning the competition in 2011.

The Mayo Women's Football League is a women's association football league featuring teams from County Mayo. It is the sister league of the Mayo Association Football League. It has previously been known as the Mayo Ladies League. The league is a summer league, beginning in March and ending in September. In 2015 the league was sponsored by Artec Facilities Management, a company based in Belmullet. Teams from the league also compete for the Mayo Cup, the Mary Walsh Cup and the Mayo Shield. They also enter the Connaught Cup and the WFAI Intermediate Cup. The league's representative team won the 2006 FAI Women's Cup and then represented the Republic of Ireland in the 2007–08 UEFA Women's Cup.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cora Staunton</span> Multi-code female Irish footballer

Cora Staunton is an Irish sportswoman. She is best known as a ladies' Gaelic footballer, winning four All-Irelands and three Ladies' National Football League titles with Mayo. She has also been an All Star on eleven occasions. In addition to playing Gaelic football, Staunton has also played three other football codes at a senior level. In 2006, as an association footballer, she won an FAI Women's Cup winner's medal with the Mayo Ladies' League representative team. In 2013, she began playing rugby union for Castlebar Ladies in the Connacht Women's League. In she 2018 made her Australian rules football debut in the AFLW competition for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, establishing herself by 2022 as one of the league's all-time great goalkickers. She has also played for the Ireland women's international rules football team. Staunton works as a HSE liaison officer, working with women from the Irish Travellers community.

Noelle Murray is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a forward for Irish club Shelbourne and the Republic of Ireland national team. Between 2011 and 2016 Murray played in six successive FAI Women's Cup finals with three clubs - St Catherine's, Raheny United and Shelbourne Ladies.

Limerick Women's Football Club was an Irish association football club based in Limerick. It is the women's section of Limerick F.C. Their senior women's team made their debut in the Women's National League in 2018. However the club has been organising women's teams, often in conjunction with the Limerick Women's & Schoolgirls' Soccer League, since at least 1973. Limerick have been credited as the inaugural winners of both the Ladies League of Ireland and the FAI Women's Cup. Ladies team was dissolved after financial collapse of Limerick F.C. main division.

Sarah Rowe is a triple code sportswoman. She is a former Republic of Ireland women's association football international. In addition to association football, Rowe has also played two other football codes at a senior level. She has played ladies' Gaelic football for Mayo and women's Australian rules football for Collingwood in the AFLW. At club level, Rowe has played association football for Castlebar Celtic, Raheny United, Shelbourne, Bohemians in the Women's National League and for Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women. Rowe was a member of the Republic of Ireland U19 team that won their group at the 2014 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and qualified for the semi-finals. In 2016, she was also a member of the Shelbourne Ladies team that won a Women's National League/FAI Women's Cup double. In 2023, she returned to association football briefly playing for Melbourne Victory and then for Bohemians.

Dearbháile Beirne is an Irish dual code footballer from Mohill in County Leitrim. In soccer she plays for Peamount United of the Women's National League (WNL) and has represented the Republic of Ireland women's national football team at youth and senior level. She has also played Ladies' Gaelic football for Leitrim GAA, competing in the Ladies' National Football League and All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies' Football Championship.
