Emma Hansberry (born 26 May 1994) is an Irish footballer and coach who plays for Women's National League (WNL) club Sligo Rovers. She previously represented Castlebar Celtic and Wexford Youths. An attacking midfielder, [2] she has also represented the Republic of Ireland women's national team. In Gaelic football Hansberry played for the St Mary's club [3] and her county, Sligo GAA. [4]

Club career

Hansberry is from Strandhill in County Sligo. At youth level she played soccer for Merville and Strandhill Celtic, as well as Gaelic football for Sligo GAA's youth teams and her school Ursuline College Sligo. [5] [6]

For the inaugural 2011–12 season of the Women's National League (WNL), Hansberry joined County Mayo club Castlebar Celtic. She scored seven goals and made "a string of highly impressive performances" to be named in the WNL Team of the Season and awarded the Young Player of the Year. [7] In the 2013 FAI Women's Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium, Hansberry played well for the underdogs Castlebar Celtic, but they eventually lost 3–2 to Raheny United after extra time. [8]

She moved to reigning WNL champions Wexford Youths during the 2015 close-season, and participated in her new club's subsequent 2015–16 UEFA Women's Champions League campaign in August 2015. [9] In November 2015 Hansberry helped Wexford Youths win the FAI Women's Cup for the first time. In the final at the Aviva Stadium Ciara Rossiter's injury time equaliser helped them prevail over Shelbourne, 4–2 on penalties after a 2–2 draw. [10]

Drained by travelling from Sligo to Wexford, Hansberry paused her soccer career in 2018 to attend university in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. [11] On 11 January 2022 Hansberry became the first player to sign for Sligo Rovers' new Women's National League team. [12] She was appointed club captain but a hamstring injury curtailed her early season appearances for the new club. [11]

International career

Youth

In 2010, Hansberry was included in the Republic of Ireland U17 squad who were quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. [13] [14] She made her competitive debut in the 3–0 group stage win over Ghana, as a substitute for Aileen Gilroy. Hansberry had previously appeared in a single friendly against Northern Ireland at under-16 level. [15]

In the absence of injured regular skipper Denise O'Sullivan, Hansberry captained the Republic of Ireland women's national under-19 football team at the 2013 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship first qualifying round. At the FAI International Football Awards she was named 2012 Under-19 Women's International Player of the Year. [16]

While enrolled at Institute of Technology, Sligo, Hansberry represented Ireland at the 2013 and 2015 Summer Universiades. [1] [17]

Senior

Hansberry was included in the senior Republic of Ireland women's national football team squad for the first time at the 2014 Cyprus Cup, but did not see any playing time during the tournament. [18] On 5 May 2014, Ireland manager Susan Ronan named Hansberry in an experimental squad for a friendly against the Basque Country. [19] She started Ireland's 2–0 defeat in Azpeitia, which was not classified as a full international fixture. [20]

In May 2015, Hansberry was one of five uncapped players called-up to the national team for a friendly match in the United States. After the match had been arranged, it was discovered to be outside FIFA's designated dates for international matches, so several of Ireland's first-choice players were not released by their professional clubs. [21]

Hansberry was recalled to the national team for the 2016 Cyprus Cup, [22] where she won her first senior cap in a 1–0 defeat by Hungary, [23] [24] and appeared as an 72nd-minute substitute in a 2–0 win over Finland. [25]

Coaching career

In June 2021 Hansberry was added to the coaching staff at Sligo Rovers' women's and girls' section. [26] In September 2021 she was present as the club announced plans to collaborate with Institute of Technology, Sligo, in fielding a senior women's team in the Women's National League from 2022. [27]

Personal life

Hansberry's aunt Bernie is married to Sligo Rovers Hall of Fame member Chris Rutherford. [3] Between 2018 and 2021 she studied physiotherapy at Northumbria University [28] and also appeared for the college soccer team. [29]

Wexford FC Women's Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Crossabeg, County Wexford. Their senior team plays in the Women's National League. In the course of women's football in Ireland, Wexford have steadily been one of the league's strongest teams.

The 2011–12 Women's National League season was the inaugural season of the Women's National League. The season was sponsored by Bus Éireann. Originally seven clubs were invited to join the league. However shortly before the start of the season Bray Wanderers/St. Joseph's pulled out due to a lack of competitive players. This left six teams – Peamount United, Castlebar Celtic, Cork Women's F.C., Raheny United, Shamrock Rovers and Wexford Youths – to play the inaugural season.

The 2012–13 Women's National League was the second season of the Women's National League. This season was again sponsored by Bus Éireann. The six founding members of the league – Peamount United, Castlebar Celtic, Cork Women's F.C., Raheny United, Shamrock Rovers and Wexford Youths – were joined for the second season by DLR Waves. Raheny United won their first of two WNL titles. They also complete a league and cup double after already winning the 2012 FAI Women's Cup. Peamount United won the 2013 WNL Cup with a 6–3 win over Castlebar Celtic. Sara Lawlor of Peamount United was the top league goalscorer with 28 goals. She also won a second consecutive Player of the Season award.

The 2015–16 Women's National League was the fifth season of the Women's National League. Two new clubs joined the league before the start of the season, restoring the number of teams in the league to eight. Kilkenny United were formed as expansion team while Raheny United's senior women's team merged with Shelbourne Ladies. This effectively saw Shelbourne Ladies takeover Raheny United's place in the WNL. The season also saw the introduction of the WNL Shield. Wexford Youths and Shelbourne Ladies finished the season as the league's two strongest teams. In the league itself, the two teams finished level on points before Wexford Youths retained the title after a play-off. Wexford Youths also completed a treble, having already won both the FAI Women's Cup and WNL Shield. Shelbourne Ladies were also runners up in the WNL Shield before going onto win the WNL Cup. Before the season was finished Castlebar Celtic withdrew because they were unable to field a team.

Nicola Sinnott is a Republic of Ireland women's international footballer who plays for Wexford Youths of the Women's National League.

Siobhán Killeen is a Republic of Ireland women's international footballer. She has also played for UCD, Raheny United and Shelbourne Ladies. In 2010, she was a member of the Republic of Ireland U-17 squad that were runners-up in the 2010 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship and quarter-finalists in the 2010 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. Killeen has also played senior ladies' Gaelic football for Dublin.

Sarah Rowe is a triple code sportswoman. She is a former Republic of Ireland women's association football international. In addition to association football, Rowe has also played two other football codes at a senior level. She has played ladies' Gaelic football for Mayo and women's Australian rules football for Collingwood in the AFLW. At club level, Rowe has played association football for Castlebar Celtic, Raheny United, Shelbourne, Bohemians in the Women's National League and for Melbourne Victory in the A-League Women. Rowe was a member of the Republic of Ireland U19 team that won their group at the 2014 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship and qualified for the semi-finals. In 2016, she was also a member of the Shelbourne Ladies team that won a Women's National League/FAI Women's Cup double. In 2023, she returned to association football briefly playing for Melbourne Victory and then for Bohemians.

The 2013 FAI Women's Cup Final was the final match of the 2013 FAI Women's Cup, the national association football Cup of the Republic of Ireland. The match took place on 3 November 2013 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Raheny United and Castlebar Celtic contested the match.

Ciara Rossiter is an Irish footballer who plays as a defender for Women's National League club Wexford Youths Women FC. She has been a member of the Republic of Ireland women's national team. She is a left-sided full-back who can also play in midfield.

Alexandra Kavanagh is an Irish association footballer who plays for Women's National League (WNL) club Shelbourne and the Republic of Ireland women's national team. She is a central midfielder with good technique, who is also a capable goal scorer.

Deirdre Doherty is an Irish dual code footballer who has played soccer for Women's National League (WNL) club Castlebar Celtic and the Republic of Ireland women's national team. She has also played inter county ladies' Gaelic football for her native Mayo, competing in the Ladies' National Football League and All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship.

Kylie Murphy is an Irish footballer who plays for Wexford Youths of the Women's National League (WNL). Predominantly a midfielder, she was successfully repurposed as a forward in 2021.

The 2022 FAI Women's Cup is the 47th edition of the Republic of Ireland's primary national knockout cup competition for women's association football teams. The ten Women's National League (WNL) teams entered the competition, as well as four non-league teams. The competition began on 9 July 2022 with the first round and concluded on 6 November 2022. The final was staged at the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, which had also hosted the previous year's final.
