The Progressive Conservative Party which had governed since 2003 election, was defeated by the Liberal Party, which won a majority in the new assembly.

51st Newfoundland and Labrador general election

The 51st Newfoundland and Labrador general election will elect members to the 50th general assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is tentatively scheduled for October 10, 2023, but due to Premier Dwight Ball's eventual resignation, the election must occur no more than one year following a Liberal leadership election, after which Ball will formally resign.

The 2020 Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador leadership election will be held on May 9 due to the announcement by Dwight Ball on February 17, 2020 that he will be resigning as Liberal Party leader and Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador effective when the party elects his successor. Provincial legislation requires that a general election must occur no more than one year following a Premier's resignation.
