Elektromotive was a British company, acquired by Chargemaster in 2017, [1] specialising in the manufacture and installation of charging infrastructure for electric cars and other electric vehicles, using their trade name of Elektrobay. [2] [3] The company had partnerships with major corporations including EDF Energy [4] and Mercedes-Benz [5] to supply charging posts and data services.

History

Elektromotive was founded in 2003 by former photographer Calvey Taylor-Haw, [6] mechanical engineer Greg Simmons [7] and motorsport entrepreneur Mike Earle in Brighton. The company was based at Sussex University at the Sussex Innovation Centre, which acts as a business incubator for startup companies. [8]

The first Elektrobays were installed by Westminster City Council in 2006 (branded as 'Juice Point'), [9] and there were later over 100 units in London. [6] [10]

Elektromotive had a 2009 deal with electricity supplier EDF Energy to part-fund the installation of some Elektrobays in public places. [11] In February 2009, Westminster City Council was accused by energy supplier Npower of infringing its trademark by calling their Elektrobays 'Juice Points'. [12]

The first on-street stations outside London were commissioned in Brighton and Hove in September 2009, although over 90 stations were already operational on private sites outside London. [9]

Charge Your Car

Elektromotive's Charge Your Car subsidiary provides "back office" services to charge point owners, in many cases local authorities. CYC handles user registration and billing, and provides a map of charge points, but does not own or maintain any points. [13]

Acquisition

In January 2017, the Competition and Markets Authority gave Chargemaster permission to acquire Elektromotive and Charge Your Car, which was completed in the same month. At that time the company had around 190 staff. [14] Charge Your Car continues as a subsidiary of BP Chargemaster. [15]

Products

The company's main product was a range of Elektrobay units for charging vehicles that supply 13 A at 230 V, [16] as well as a 32 A version (single or three phase) for faster charging of vehicles. [17] These are available as free-standing posts or wall mounted, and with a range of connectors. They also offer intelligent systems to communicate with the vehicle while charging. [18]

Partnerships

Elektrobay recharging units were installed at Mercedes-Benz dealerships from 2010. [19]

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) describes a system in which plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) sell demand response services to the grid. Demand services are either delivering electricity to the grid or reducing the rate of charge from the grid. Demand services reduce the peaks in demand for grid supply, and hence reduce the probability of disruption from load variations. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) are related, but the AC phase is not synchronised with the grid, so the power is only available to "off-grid" load.

An electric vehicle charging network is an infrastructure system of charging stations to recharge electric vehicles. The term electric vehicle infrastructure (EVI) may refer to charging stations in general or the network of charging stations across a nation or region. The proliferation of charging stations can be driven by charging station providers or government investment, and is a key influence on consumer behaviour in the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. While charging network vendors have in the past offered proprietary solutions limited to specific manufacturers, vendors now usually supply energy to electric vehicles regardless of manufacturer.

Smart is a German automotive marque established in 1994. Smart Automobile Co., Ltd. is a joint venture established by Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in 2019 and aimed at producing Smart-badged cars in China to be marketed globally. The venture is headquartered in Ningbo. Originally, the marque was known for producing microcars and subcompacts, primarily the Fortwo and Forfour, at Smartville in Hambach, Moselle, France and in the Revoz plant. It now produces small battery electric vehicles at a manufacturing plant in China, with distribution, marketing and aftersales activities in Europe handled by smart Europe GmbH, which is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany.

Share Now GmbH is a German carsharing company, formed from the merger of Car2Go and DriveNow. Since 2022, it is a subsidiary of the Free2Move division of multinational automaker Stellantis providing carsharing services in urban areas in Europe, and formerly in North America. It has over four million registered members and a fleet of over 14,000 vehicles in 18 cities across Europe.

Shenzhen BYD New Energy Co., Ltd., trading as Denza, is an automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Shenzhen, China, specialising in luxury electric cars and a joint venture between BYD Auto Industry and the Mercedes-Benz Group. Founded in May 2010, in late 2014 the company introduced its first model, the Denza EV. The car was initially put on sale in selected Chinese cities only. In late 2021, Denza underwent a restructuring as Mercedes-Benz reduced its share to 10%, while BYD held the rest.

Mercedes-EQ is a series of battery electric vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. The first model was previewed at the Paris Motor Show in 2016 with the Generation EQ concept vehicle. All of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle design and production efforts will target the EQ family.

Chargemaster Limited is a supplier of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, based in Milton Keynes, England. It provides charging units for home, business and public use, and operates its own electric vehicle public charging network, which is the largest network in the United Kingdom.
