Elisa Villanueva Beard is the CEO of Teach For America (TFA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for low-income students across America. Villanueva Beard began her education career as a 1998 corps member of TFA, teaching first-grade and second-grade bilingual education.
Villanueva Beard grew up in the Rio Grande Valley in McAllen, Texas. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from DePauw University in 1998, where she was also a member of the college's NCAA Division III basketball team. [2] Villanueva Beard recalls being part of a small minority of Mexican American students at DePauw and struggling academically when she first started college, despite graduating at the top of her high school class. [3]
After graduating from college, Villanueva Beard served as a corps member with Teach For America (TFA), teaching first-grade and second-grade bilingual education in Phoenix, Arizona. After three years in the classroom, she became the leader of the organization's Rio Grande Valley region. Four years later, in 2005, Villanueva Beard was appointed TFA's Chief Operating Officer. [4] As COO, Villanueva Beard played a key role in expanding the organization's field operations from 22 to 46 regions.
In 2013, Wendy Kopp transitioned out of the role of CEO of TFA, passing the leadership to co-CEOs Villanueva Beard and Matthew Kramer. In September 2015, Kramer stepped down from his position, and Villanueva Beard became the sole CEO of the organization.

DePauw University is a private liberal arts college in Greencastle, Indiana. It was founded in 1837 as Indiana Asbury College and changed its name to DePauw University in 1884. The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA) was a public university in Edinburg, Texas. Founded in 1927, it was a component institution of the University of Texas System. The university served the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas with baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees. The Carnegie Foundation classified UTPA as a "doctoral research university". From the institution's founding until it was merged into the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), it grew from 200 students to over 20,000, making UTPA the 10th-largest university in Texas. The majority of these students were natives of the Rio Grande Valley. UTPA also operated an Upper Level Studies Center in Rio Grande City, Starr County, Texas. On August 15, 2014, Dr. Havidan Rodriguez was appointed interim President of UTPA, the institution's final leader.

Sunil Kumar Sahu is an Indian-born American professor. He is Leonard E. and Mary B. Howell Professor of Political Science at DePauw University. He has been a member of the Political Science department since 1988 and was the department chair for 10 years. Prior to DePauw, he taught Political Science at St. Xavier College in Chicago and Delhi University in India. A naturalized citizen of the United States, Sahu is a native of India. He was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, in a politically active family—his father, a grandfather and two uncles were involved in India's freedom movement. Sahu attended L.S. College in Muzaffarpur, where he was influenced by the faculty who carried on the legacy of nationalist leaders who had taught at that college a generation earlier, such as Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India's first President (1950–62), Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, a Hindi nationalist poet, and J.B. Kripalani, President of Indian National Congress at the time of the country's independence in 1947.

He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, where he attended Garfield Senior High School, now known as Hamilton High School.
