Elisabeth "Lizzi" Engstler (born May 6, 1960, in Villach) is an Austrian television presenter, musical performer and singer who took part in the Eurovision Song Contest with the duo Mess in 1982.

Life and career

Elisabeth Engstler grew up in the Seehotel Engstler on Wörthersee. [1] After school, she began to study medicine in Vienna, but did not finish. In 1982 she represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest with Michael Scheickl as the duo "Mess" with the song Sonntag and reached ninth place. The duo released the titles Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So oder so, Träumen von Olivenbäumen, Cabrio and Ich will ein Eis as well as the two English versions of their competition entry Honey Bee and Sunday. Mess then disbanded.

Engstler began studying at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien (operetta, musical and chanson). After an engagement at the Burgtheater and the leading role in the musical "Valerie" at the Wiener Festwochen, she completed her training in 1986. Since then, she has presented Ferienexpress for ORF, from 1987 Wurlitzer, Ich und Du, Die große Chance, Happy End, from 1995 to 2007 alongside Wolfram Pirchner Willkommen Österreich and Frisch gekocht. In 2005, she received the Romy as the most popular presenter.

Until 1996, she presented radio programs such as Querstadtein and Autofahrer unterwegs . Since 1997, she has been performing as a singer again and released a CD with love songs and musical hits under the title Endlich wieder Musik.

Alternating with Reinhard Jesionek and Verena Scheitz, she hosted the early evening programs Frühlingszeit, Sommerzeit, Herbstzeit and Winterzeit on ORF from June 2007 to September 2012. [2] In the program heute leben she was an outside reporter, in the successor format Daheim in Österreich she is also occasionally. In 2008, Elisabeth Engstler took part in the ORF dance show Dancing Stars . With her partner Alexander Zaglmaier, she took second place behind her ORF colleague Dorian Steidl with partner Nicole Kuntner. In March 2009 she published Mein Chaos-Kochbuch. The audio CD Sehnsucht was released in 2011. From January 7, 2014, until the end of 2014, Elisabeth Engstler hosted Frisch gekocht again.

Since September 2017, Elisabeth Engstler has played the role of hotel manager Romy Edler in the jukebox musical I Am from Austria . [3]

In 2020, she recorded the announcements for the Badner Bahn. [4] As part of the Sommernachtskomödie Rosenburg in 2023, she played the role of Queen Elizabeth in a stage version of Shakespeare in Love directed by Marcus Ganser. [5]

Austria has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 56 times since its debut in 1957. The country has won twice, in 1966 and 2014, and such it holds the record for the longest gap between consecutive wins — 48 years. The contest is broadcast in Austria by ORF. Vienna was the host city on both of the occasions that the contest was held in Austria, in 1967 and 2015.

Austria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song "Y así" written by Christof Spörk and Edi Köhldorfer. The song was performed by the group Global Kryner. The Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) organised the national final Song.Null.Fünf in order to select the Austrian entry for the 2005 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. Five artists and ten songs competed in a televised show where a public vote consisting of regional televoting and mobile phone voting exclusively selected "Y así" performed by Global Kryner as the winner.

Austria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 1999 with the song "Reflection" written by Dave Moskin. The song was performed by Bobbie Singer. The Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) returned to the Eurovision Song Contest after a one-year absence following their relegation from 1998 as one of the six countries with the least total average points over the preceding five contests. On 12 February 1999, ORF announced that they had internally selected Bobbie Singer to compete at the 1999 contest in Jerusalem, Israel, while "Reflection" was presented to the public on 25 February 1999 during the ORF programme Vera.

The Grand Prix der Volksmusik was an annual regional song contest for folk music, held from 1986 until 2010. The countries taking part were Germany, Austria, Switzerland and, from 2000, South Tyrol.

Austria participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "Woki mit deim Popo" written by Lukas Plöchl and Manuel Hoffelner. The song was performed by the duo Trackshittaz. The Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) organised the national final Österreich rockt den Song Contest in order to select the Austrian entry for the 2012 contest in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ten songs competed in a televised show where a public vote first selected the top two entries to proceed to a second round of voting. In the second round, "Woki mit deim Popo" was selected as the winner after gaining 51% of the votes from a public vote. This was the first time that the Austrian song was performed entirely in the Mühlviertlerisch dialect at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Austrian broadcaster Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) organised the national final Wer singt für Österreich? in order to select the Austrian entry for the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Ten songs competed in a televised show where a jury panel and a public vote first selected the top two entries to proceed to a second round of voting. In the second round, a public vote exclusively selected "Loin d'ici" performed by Zoë as the winner. This was the first time that the Austrian song was performed entirely in the French language at the Eurovision Song Contest. The Austrian song was also the only entry performed in the final entirely in a language other than English.

Austria was represented by the band Mess consisting of Fritz and Elisabeth 'Lizzi' Engstler. They performed their song "Sonntag", at the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in Harrogate on 24 April. Mess was the winner of the Austrian national final for the contest, held on 25 March. The song was chosen through a national final organised by broadcaster ORF.
