Elise Rasoamampionona was a Malagasy politician. In 1964 she was elected to the National Assembly,becoming its first female member. In 1970 she was the first woman appointed to the cabinet when she became Secretary of State for the Welfare of Women and Children.
Rasoamampionona joined the Social Democratic Party and became head of its women's section. [1] Following the death of Stéphenson Rajaona in December 1963,Rasoamampionona was the only candidate to contest the resulting by-election for the 6th constituency in January 1964. [2] She was elected with 397,985 of the 433,000 registered voters voting for her, [3] becoming the first female member of the legislature. [4] She was re-elected from the 5th constituency in the 1965 elections, [2] and became deputy leader of the party. [5] In 1970 she became the first female minister in Madagascar, [6] when she was appointed Secretary of State for the Welfare of Women and Children. [7]
Her son Elise Razaka later served as Minister of Energy and Mines. [8]

The representation of women in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom has been an issue in the politics of the United Kingdom at numerous points in the 20th and 21st centuries. Originally debate centred on whether women should be allowed to vote and stand for election as Members of Parliament. The Parliament Act 1918 gave women over 21 the right to stand for election as a Member of Parliament. The United Kingdom has had three female Prime Ministers:Margaret Thatcher (1979–1990),Theresa May (2016–2019),and Liz Truss (2022). The publication of the book Women in the House by Elizabeth Vallance in 1979 highlighted the under-representation of women in Parliament. In more modern times concerns about the under-representation of women led the Labour Party to introduce and,decades later,abandon all-women short lists,something which was later held to breach discrimination laws.

She entered politics at the age of 17,campaigning on behalf of political prisoners,and becoming Madagascar's first woman municipal councilor,before becoming the first Malagasy woman to establish and lead a political party. She was a committed Marxist and co-founded the communist Congress Party for the Independence of Madagascar,which took power in 1975. In 1977 she became Madagascar's first female minister,responsible for promoting revolutionary art and culture,but lost her job in 1991 when her ministry was abolished in the course of Madagascar's return to multi-party democracy. She remained an active political campaigner and journalist until her death in 2011.
