Elita Veidemane (born December 9, 1955 in Riga) is a Latvian journalist, publicist and public worker. In 1980 she graduated from the Latvian State University Faculty of Philology, and from 1981 to 1988 worked for the newspaper Padomju Jaunatne (Soviet Youth). She worked as a Latvian language and literature teacher at a school in Jūrmala in the 1980s. [1] From 1988 until its closure in 1992 she was the chief editor of the Latvian Popular Front publication Atmoda (Revival). [2]

Since 2008 she is the Deputy Chief Editor of the daily newspaper Neatkarīgā Rīta Avīze .

The Latvian diplomatic service in exile was the only governmental body of the Republic of Latvia which continued its activities during the Nazi and Soviet occupation of Latvia during 1940–1991. Latvian diplomats who were stationed in embassies and consulates at the moment of the occupation in 1940, refused to recognize the occupation and return to Soviet Latvia. They continued to formally represent the interests of Latvia in countries that did not recognize the Soviet annexation. After the restoration of Latvian independence in 1991, the diplomats started reporting to the restored Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Atmoda was a weekly newspaper in Latvian SSR and Latvia issued from December 1988 to April 1992. The name of the newspaper is a reference to Latvian revival movements known as the Latvian National Awakenings.

The National Library of Latvia is a national cultural institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture of Latvia. Its current main building is known as the Castle of Light. The National Library of Latvia was formed in 1919 after the independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed in 1918. The first supervisor of the Library was Jānis Misiņš, a librarian and the founder of the Latvian scientific bibliography (1862–1945). The current building was designed in 1989 by noted Latvian-American architect Gunnar Birkerts (1925–2017), who emigrated to the United States and made his career there. The guerrilla war in the Baltic states was an insurgency waged by Baltic partisans against the Soviet Union from 1944 to 1956.
