This sensitivity is also visible in paintings where she adds fabrics to the canvas. By covering the fabrics in paint and integrating them into the painting, she uses the inherent structure, relief and colours of the material. [1] This has evolved into her own distinctive painting style. [2] Besides this technique Ellen works mainly with oil-based paint.

Dijkhuis graduated at the Classical Academy of Fine Arts Groningen in 2013. [3] Her paintings have been presented at various expositions and Art Fairs in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. [4] She lives and works in Hattem (Gelderland NL) and is represented by Galerie Bonnard in Nuenen and Galerie Terbeek in Beetsterzwaag.

Les Nabis

Les Nabis were a group of young French artists active in Paris from 1888 until 1900, who played a large part in the transition from impressionism and academic art to abstract art, symbolism and the other early movements of modernism. The members included Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Paul Ranson, Édouard Vuillard, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Félix Vallotton, Paul Sérusier and Auguste Cazalis. Most were students at the Académie Julian in Paris in the late 1880s. The artists shared a common admiration for Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne and a determination to renew the art of painting, but varied greatly in their individual styles. They believed that a work of art was not a depiction of nature, but a synthesis of metaphors and symbols created by the artist. In 1900, the artists held their final exhibition and went their separate ways.

Inspired by works done by an African-American artist, Romare Bearden, Tschabalala Self creates collages of various items that she has collected over time and sews them together to depict black female bodies that "defy the narrow spaces in which they are forced to exist", which she derives from the history behind the African-American struggle and oppression in society. Self reclaims the black female body and portrays them to be free of stereotypes without having to fear being punished. Her goal is to "create alternative narratives around the black body".
