Career

Born in Worcester, England, Perks began riding grasstrack at the age of 6 and took up speedway aged 10 after moving to Australia with his family in 2007. [2]

He made his British speedway league debut in 2014 with Scunthorpe Scorpions' National League team, and was signed by Poole Pirates as a club asset in 2015, [3] riding that year in the Premier League for Scorpions and in the National League for Cradley Heathens and Eastbourne Eagles, and in 2016 for Plymouth Devils and Isle of Wight Warriors. [2] [4]

At the beginning of the 2017 season Perks signed for the Rye House Rockets. [5] He also rode that season for Wolverhampton Wolves, Redcar Bears, and Buxton Hitmen. [1] After failing to get a team place at the start of the 2018 season, he was signed by Peterborough Panthers in June as a short-term replacement for Emil Grondal, [6] and in July returned to the Heathens team for their National Trophy campaign. [7]

In December 2018 he signed to ride for Leicester Lions in the SGB Championship and Leicester Lion Cubs in the National League for the 2019 season. He also signed for Swindon Robins in the SGB Premiership. He went on to win all three leagues with these teams in 2019, the first ever rider to achieve this. [8] [9] He also won the SGB Premiership Supporters Cup with the Robins, the Championship Shield with the Lions and National League Knockout Cup with the Lion Cubs in the same year. [10]

The 2017 SGB Premiership was the 83rd season of the top division of British Speedway. It was the first time that it was known as the SGB Premiership after changing its name from the Elite League.

The Speedway Great Britain (SGB) Premiership is the top division of speedway league competition in the United Kingdom, governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB) in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). It was introduced for 2017 following a restructuring of British speedway.

The SGB Premiership 2018 was the 84th season of the top division of Great British Speedway in 2018. The season ran between March and October 2018 and had eight teams participating. The line-up of teams remained the same as in 2017. The Swindon Robins were the defending champions after winning the title in 2017. BT Sport continued its TV coverage of the SGB Premiership in 2018. Poole Pirates defeated King's Lynn Stars in the Play off final. It was Poole's tenth tier one title, which brought them level in second place with the Wembley Lions in the historical records.

The SGB Premiership 2019 was the 85th season of the top division, called the SGB Premiership, of the British speedway championship in 2019. From the 2018 league season two teams, Leicester Lions and Somerset Rebels, dropped down to the next league down, the SGB Championship, and were replaced in the league by Ipswich Witches and Peterborough Panthers. Although no promotion or relegation exist in British speedway these changes were taken purely due to financial concerns of the teams that dropped out of the SGB Premiership. Rye House Rockets who had taken part in the previous SGB Premiership season closed down.

The National League speedway 2019 now known as the National Development League for the 2019 season was the third tier/division of British speedway. There were several team changes for the 2019 league season with reigning league champions and KO cup winners Eastbourne Eagles, along with the Birmingham Brummies, moving into the SGB Championship. Coventry Bees, who rode their home meetings at Leicester the previous season, did not enter the league, but Leicester Lions entered a team. Cradley Heathens fully entered the league after the previous season National Trophy only commitment, while the Buxton Hitmen decided not compete and only run open meetings (friendlies). It was announced on Tuesday 10 September before the end of the 2019 National Development League season that Stoke Potters' home venue at Loomer Road Stadium had been sold and that the team would not be operating in 2020.
