The Inkatha Freedom Party is a conservative political party in South Africa. Although registered as a national party,it has had only minor electoral success outside its home province of KwaZulu-Natal. Mangosuthu Buthelezi,who served as chief minister of KwaZulu during the Apartheid period,founded the party in 1975 and led it until 2019. He was succeeded as party president in 2019 by Velenkosini Hlabisa.
KwaZulu-Natal is one of the nine multi-member constituencies of the National Assembly of South Africa,the lower house of the Parliament of South Africa,the national legislature of South Africa. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The constituency currently elects 41 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 general election it had 5,524,666 registered electors.
Belinda Francis Scott,formerly Belinda Barrett,is a South African politician who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance from 2014 to 2019. She served several terms in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1994 to 2019,representing the African National Congress (ANC) from 2002 onwards after defecting from both the Democratic Party and the Inkatha Freedom Party. After she left the provincial legislature in 2019,she served as Deputy Mayor of eThekwini from September 2019 until she resigned from politics in February 2021.
Keith Muntuwenkosi "Musa" Zondi is a South African politician who served as Deputy Minister of Public Works from 2001 to 2004. He represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Council of Provinces from 1994 to 1999 and in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2012. He served as the party's secretary-general and was widely touted as a possible successor to IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi before he resigned from his party office and legislative seat in February 2012.
Hendrik Jacobus "Hennie" Bekker is a South African politician who served in the Parliament of South Africa from 1987 to 2009,excepting a brief hiatus in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 2003 to 2004. Inkosi Mhlabunzima Wellington Hlengwa was a South African politician and Zulu traditional leader who served as Deputy Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature until his death in March 2005. Before assuming that office in 2004,Hlengwa represented his political party,the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP),in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2004. He was also the chief of KwaThoyana Tribal Authority near Umbumbulu in eThekwini,KwaZulu-Natal,a position to which he was appointed in 1988.
Faith Xolile Gasa is a South African politician who was KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education and Culture from August 2000 to June 2001. She represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1995 and in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1995 until her death in 2005. A teacher by profession,she was also a former chairperson of the IFP Women's Brigade.
Lindumusa Bekizitha Gabriel Ndabandaba is a retired South African politician and academic who served in the National Assembly and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2014. He represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) until 2003,when he crossed the floor to the African National Congress (ANC).
Velaphi Bethuel Ndlovu is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal. He represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature for two decades from 1994 to 2014. During apartheid,he was a member of the KwaZulu Legislative Assembly,serving the Imbali constituency. He is also a former deputy chairperson of the IFP.
Jan Hendrik Slabbert is a retired South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2003. He joined the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature after that. He is also a former mayor of Vryheid,KwaZulu-Natal.
Lindiwe Rosebud Mbuyazi is a South African politician who represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) coming from the education department as a school teacher,principal and National teachers Union Activist(NATU).She was also a party Whip in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2004,serving the KwaZulu-Natal constituency. After that,she was a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature 2004-2009.
Usha Roopnarain is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal. Between 1999 and 2013,she represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly and KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. She resigned from the party in June 2013 and joined the African National Congress (ANC).
Aumsensingh "Omie" Singh is a South African politician and businessman from KwaZulu-Natal. From 2014 to 2019,he represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Council of Provinces,where he co-chaired Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members' Interests. Before that,he served in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 2001 to 2014 and in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2001. Having entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party (DP),he joined the ANC by floor-crossing in March 2003.
Madala Abram Mzizi,commonly spelled Abraham Mzizi,is a retired South African politician from Gauteng. He represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 2003,in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 2003 to 2004,and in the National Council of Provinces from 2004 to 2009. He rose to prominence during apartheid as an IFP activist on the East Rand.
Geoffrey Bongumusa Bhengu is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal. He represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the national Parliament from May 1994 until August 2002,when moved to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
Teresa Millin is a retired South African politician who served in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1999 to 2003 and in the National Assembly from 2003 to 2004. She represented the Inkatha Freedom Party until March 2003,when she established her own party,the Independent African Movement.
Eileen Eidana Nkosi-Shandu was a South African politician who served as Deputy Minister of Public Works in the South African Government of National Unity from 1996 to 1999. Mfuniselwa John Bhengu is a South African politician and social philosopher. Between 1999 and 2014,he represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and both houses of the South African Parliament.
Mzikayise Vincent Ngema is a South African politician who served in the National Assembly from 2002 to 2009. He was elected as a member of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) but crossed the floor to the National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) in September 2005. He was elected as secretary-general of Nadeco in April 2007.
