The Berlin Wall was a guarded concrete barrier that encircled West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, separating it from East Berlin and the German Democratic Republic. Construction of the Berlin Wall was commenced by the government of the GDR on 13 August 1961. It included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area that contained anti-vehicle trenches, beds of nails and other defenses. The primary intention for the Wall's construction was to prevent East German citizens from fleeing to the West.
Thierry Noir is a French artist and muralist based in Berlin. He is considered the first artist to paint the Berlin Wall in the 1980s. He created brightly-colored paintings across large spans of the Berlin Wall and some of these original paintings can still be seen on surviving segments of the Wall in art collections and on the East Side Gallery. Noir's work and style are now considered iconic, and Noir is also regarded as one of the forerunners of the street art movement as a whole. He continues to create murals worldwide in cities including London, Los Angeles, and Sydney.
Sibylle Bergemann was a German photographer. In 1990, she co-founded the Ostkreuz photographers agency. She is remembered for documenting developments in East Berlin during the Communist era and for her international assignments for Stern and later for Geo.

Ana Lupaș is a Romanian installation artist, textile artist, and photographer. She studied at the Institute of Fine and Decorative Art in Cluj-Napoca. Her art is influenced by neo-avant-garde movements such as land art, post-minimalism and Arte Povera, as well as folklore and local practices. She uses materials such as wool, cotton, linen, not only to challenge artistic norms, but also out of necessity, as she faced harsh living conditions under the communist dictatorship of the time. She managed a hidden local artistic community and worked somewhat secretly, creating artworks as a form of silent resistance against the totalitarian regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, during which many of her family members - part of the pre-war political and intellectual elite - were imprisoned, tortured and killed.

The Erfurt Women Artists' Group was founded in 1983 by Gabriele Stötzer. It was a group of women artists in Erfurt, East Germany. They met weekly in various houses around Erfurt. They created films and fashion as well as ceramics, photographs and paintings. The group staged performances, fashion shows, and concerts.
