Emelio "Chieffy" Asada Caligdong (born 28 September 1982) [2] is a Filipino footballer who last played as a left winger for the Philippines. He is still playing actively for Green Archers United in the United Football League. [3] Formerly a player for the Air Force football club, he was an enlisted member of the Philippine Air Force.

International career

Caligdong made his debut in the 2004 Tiger Cup [4] , playing all four matches and scoring three goals. Two of those goals came in the 89th and 92nd minute in the 2–1 win over Timor-Leste, [5] making it the first ever victory of the Philippines in the ASEAN Football Championship.

The Timor-Leste national football team is the national team of East Timor and is controlled by the Federação de Futebol de Timor-Leste. They joined FIFA on 12 September 2005.

He has also played for the Philippines U-23 at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games and in the pre-SEA Games tournament where he scored against Myanmar and Timor-Leste. [6]

The Philippines national under-23 football team represents the Philippines in international football competitions in the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and any other under-23 international football tournaments. It is controlled by the Philippine Football Federation, the governing body of football in the country.

2005 Southeast Asian Games

The 2005 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, was a Southeast Asian multi-sport event held in Manila, Philippines.

The 2005 AFF U-23 Youth Championship was the first ever edition of the AFF U-23 Youth Championship, organised by ASEAN Football Federation. The tournament was held from 29 August to 7 September in Bangkok, Thailand. This tournament was also known as the pre-SEA Games tournament, as a preparatory tournament for the nations competing in the Manila SEA Games in December of the same year.

On the first match of the Philippines in the Qualifying playoff round of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification against Mongolia, Caligdong scored a goal in the 43rd minute.

The 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification phase saw eight teams advance to the final tournament in Nepal. The qualification draw was held on 20 October 2010, in AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Mongolia national football team represents Mongolia in international football and is controlled by the Mongolian Football Federation.

On September 30, 2011, Caligdong scored two goals in a draw against Hong Kong [7] and two more goals on October 4 against Macau in the 2011 Long Teng Cup. Caligdong, who shrugged off injuries to score both goals against Macau, emerged the top scorer for the tournament, earning the Golden Boot trophy. [8] [9]

The Macau national football team represents the Chinese special administrative region of Macau in international association football. The team is supervised by the Macau Football Association. The Macau football team has a ranking that is one of the lowest among the FIFA members. Although usually known as simply Macau, the EAFF refers to the team as Macau, China.

The 2011 Long Teng Cup was the 2nd staging of the Long Teng Cup, an international football competition held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The tournament took place from 30 September to 4 October 2011.

On September 29, 2012, Caligdong scored a goal on the 34th minute in the last match of the 2012 Philippine Peace Cup versus Chinese Taipei which ended in a 3–1 score line. The Philippines got the championship title with a 3 win, no draw and no loss record. [10]

The 2012 Philippine Peace Cup was the inaugural edition of the tournament, four-nation international football competition organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF). It was originally slated for 12–16 October but the PFF moved it to 25–29 September to give way to the participation of local side Loyola Meralco Sparks in the 2012 Singapore Cup. The Chinese Taipei national football team represents Taiwan in international football and is controlled by the Chinese Taipei Football Association, the governing body for football in Taiwan.

On November 27, 2012, Caligdong who came in as a substitute in the 2nd half and scored an important goal for the Philippines in a 1–0 victory against Vietnam in the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup. The Philippines eventually finished second in the group stage and qualified for the semi finals with a 2 win, 1 loss record.

In November 2014, Caligdong announced his retirement from international football citing issues on maintaining fitness and plans to focus more on his club. [11]

Club career

In January 2015, Cebu-based UC-ERCO Bro Nationals loaned Caligdong along with other players from the United Football League (UFL), from Green Archers for their stint at the 2014–15 PFF National Men's Club Championship finals. [12] However the UFL blocked the loan moved and insisted that players from the UFL can't play for other clubs even in competitions hosted by the Philippine Football Federation. The UFL insists that if Caligdong and other loaned players by ERCO suited for the club they can't return to their mother club. This is after other UFL teams complained the loaning of players from Green Archers United. [13]

Coaching career

Caligdong obtained a "C" Coaching License sometime in 2014 and will coach the Green Archers United youth team. He is also aspiring to become an assistant coach for the national football teams. [11] [14]

By March 2016, Caligdong is now the head coach of the national under-14 team and a playing assistant coach at Green Archers United senior team. [15] In May 2018, Caligdong became the head coach of the University of Perpetual Help football team which plays in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) of the Philippines succeeding Aaron Nebreja. [16]

In its last season in 2016, it was contested by 12 clubs and operated without a system of promotion and relegation with UFL Division 2, which was discontinued.
