Emma B. King (1857-1933) was an American Impressionist from Indiana. She began her career as an artist in late 20s, and was a known participant in the Indianapolis City Hospital Project. [1]
King began her art training as a student at the Art Association of Indianapolis and later studied at the Art Students League of New York. She also studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art in Long Island, NY. [2] King painted many landscapes of the east coast, and some of the midwest as well. However, King was not regarded as one of the most devoted regionalists within the Hoosier Group. [3] King was a well-documented participant in the Indianapolis City Hospital Project and was one of only three women to be chosen to participate in the project. King produced two murals for the hospital collection, entitled Hope and Hope Fulfilled. However, these paintings have been lost. [1]
King was also a highly regarded poet and won awards from the Poetry Society of Great Britain and a Writers Club contest in 1927.
Janet Payne Bowles was an American art educator, metalsmith, and jewelry designer from Indianapolis, Indiana, who is best known for creating intricate Arts-and-Crafts-style jewelry, flatware, and other small objects. Although the self-taught artisan had little commercial success during her lifetime, she became famous after designing a jewelry collection for actress Maude Adams to wear in a stage production of As You Like It. Sir Caspar Purdon Clarke and J. P. Morgan commissioned Payne Bowles to make severals pieces of metalwork and jewelry for their collections. She also regularly exhibited her art in the United States and Europe and taught art classes at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis from 1912 until her retirement in 1942. Examples of Payne Bowles's work are included in the collections of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. She also wrote book reviews for Modern Art in the early years of her career and contributed articles to The Craftsman in 1904, Handicraft in 1909 and in 1910, and Jewelers' Circular Weekly in 1911. In addition, Payne Bowles provided illumination paintings for limited-edition books such as The Second Epistle of John (1901). Her novel, Gossamer to Steel, was published in 1917.
Carl Christopher Graf was an American impressionist painter from Indiana. Graf was known for having been an artist in the Hoosier Group and a participant in the City Hospital mural project.
Clifton Wheeler (1883–1953) was an American Impressionist artist from Hadley, Indiana. Wheeler was known for having been a participant in the City Hospital mural project, and having been a member of the Hoosier Group and the Irvington Group. Wheeler was a private pupil of William Forsyth, and was also known for having contributed to Indianapolis’ public art scene multiple times throughout his career as an artist.
Dorothy Morlan was an American Impressionist artist who was born in Salem, Ohio and lived in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Helene Hibben was an American artist from Indianapolis. Hibben was a sculptor and is a confirmed participant in the Indianapolis City Hospital Project. She created a large bronze statue for the creation of the Burdsal Units. It can still be seen on the campus of Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital. She spent a large portion of her life in childcare, caring for children during World War II and teaching at her own school. In 1917, Hibben founded the Hibben school for kindergarten and primary grades.
Simon Baus (1882–1969) was an American Impressionist from Indianapolis. Baus participated in the Indianapolis City Hospital project. Baus was also a member of the Irvington Group.
The Eskenazi Health Art Collection consists of a wide variety of artworks composed of fragments from the 1914 City Hospital mural and artwork project, artworks added over time, and newer pieces which include works created for the new Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and campus in 2013. Other works have been added occasionally; there are also artworks at the clinics throughout Marion County.
Walter Hixson Isnogle was an American impressionist artist. Isnogle was known for his participation in the Indianapolis City Hospital Project.
