Emma Trelles is a Latina poet, writer, and professor. She served as poet laureate of Santa Barbara, California from 2021-2023. [1] [2]
Trelles earned an MFA from Florida International University in the 1990s, where she was mentored by the poet Campbell McGrath and fiction writer John Dufresne. [3] [4] Trelles is a professor of composition and creative writing at Santa Barbara City College.
A contributor to the Best American Poetry blog, Trelles's poetry and prose have been anthologized in Ocho, Gulf Stream , Verse Daily, MiPOesias Magazine, The Rumpus and Tigertail: A South Florida Annual. Her journalism has been featured in the Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel. Her work appeared in Best American Poetry 2013. [5] She is series editor for the Alta California Chapbook Series published by Gunpowder Press. [6] In 2022, Trelles was name an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. [7]
Trelles has been the recipient of fellowships from the CantoMundo and the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Her book Tropicalia, [8] was selected by Silvia Curbelo for the 2010 Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize. [9] Tropicalia takes its title from the 1960s Brazilian arts movement of the same name. [10]
Rita Frances Dove is an American poet and essayist. From 1993 to 1995, she served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. She is the first African American to have been appointed since the position was created by an act of Congress in 1986 from the previous "consultant in poetry" position (1937–86). Dove also received an appointment as "special consultant in poetry" for the Library of Congress's bicentennial year from 1999 to 2000. Dove is the second African American to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, in 1987, and she served as the Poet Laureate of Virginia from 2004 to 2006. Since 1989, she has been teaching at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she held the chair of Commonwealth Professor of English from 1993 to 2020; as of 2020, she holds the chair of Henry Hoyns Professor of Creative Writing.
Campbell John McGrath is an American poet. He is the author of twelve full-length collections of poetry, including Seven Notebooks, Shannon: A Poem of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, In the Kingdom of the Sea Monkeys, and XX: Poems for the Twentieth Century, for which McGrath was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.
Lucille Clifton was an American poet, writer, and educator from Buffalo, New York. From 1979 to 1985 she was Poet Laureate of Maryland. Clifton was a finalist twice for the Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
Josephine Jacobsen was a Canadian-born American poet, short story writer, essayist, and critic. She was appointed the twenty-first Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1971. In 1997, she received the Poetry Society of America's highest award, the Robert Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Poetry.
Chicano poetry is a subgenre of Chicano literature that stems from the cultural consciousness developed in the Chicano Movement. Chicano poetry has its roots in the reclamation of Chicana/o as an identity of empowerment rather than denigration. As a literary field, Chicano poetry emerged in the 1960s and formed its own independent literary current and voice.
Joy Harjo is an American poet, musician, playwright, and author. She served as the 23rd United States Poet Laureate, the first Native American to hold that honor. She was also only the second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to have served three terms. Harjo is a citizen of the Muscogee Nation and belongs to Oce Vpofv. She is an important figure in the second wave of the literary Native American Renaissance of the late 20th century. She studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts, completed her undergraduate degree at University of New Mexico in 1976, and earned an MFA degree at the University of Iowa in its creative writing program.
Natasha Trethewey is an American poet who served as United States Poet Laureate from 2012 to 2014. She won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her 2006 collection Native Guard, and is a former Poet Laureate of Mississippi.

Vivian Yeiser Laramore was Florida's second Poet Laureate from 1931–1975. After her second marriage, she used the name Vivian Laramore Rader. She was a teacher of poetry and created the Laramore-Rader Poetry Group from her home in Miami, Florida. She is the first and only woman Poet Laureate of Florida.
