Engel Modderman (1 October 1951) is a Dutch communist politician and activist.

Career

Until 1999, Modderman was active on behalf of the New Communist Party of the Netherlands (NCPN), of which he was also a member of the national board [1] and the lijsttrekker in the 1998 Dutch general election. [1] [2] [3]

In 1999, Modderman and the NCPN came into conflict over the Blauwestad construction project and he founded the United Communist Party (Dutch : Verenigde Communistische Partij, VCP), [1] of which he has been political leader ever since. Resistance against Blauwestad remained one of the spearheads of the VCP. [4] Later, as a municipal councilor, Modderman protested against the new construction of cultural center De Klinker in Winschoten [5] and against the extraction of gas from the Slochteren natural gas field. [6] Modderman is leader of the VCP in the municipal council of Oldambt, where his party has been represented with four seats since 2014. In the 2014 Dutch municipal elections, Modderman received the most votes of all politicians in Oldambt, [7] after which talks started about the formation of a college with the Socialist Party (SP), Party for the North (Dutch : Partij voor het Noorden, PvhN), and VCP. The latter left the negotiations, however, and the SP and PvhN formed a coalition with the Labour Party and the Christian Democratic Appeal instead. [8]

On May 14, 2018, Modderman was appointed as acting chairman of the municipal council after the sudden death of mayor Pieter Smit. [9]

Sportclub Veendam was a Dutch professional association football club based in Veendam, province of Groningen. Founded on 4 September 1894 as Look-Out, it became P.J. Veendam in 1909, Veendam in 1910, SC Veendam in 1974, BV Veendam in 1997 and again SC Veendam in 2011. The club was a founder member of the regional first tier Eerste Klasse Noord in 1916 and became champions of the division in 1931–32; it qualified for the national championship play-offs but finished in bottom place. Veendam took part in the inaugural season of the third tier Tweede Divisie in 1956–57; after yo-yoing between the third and second tiers, the team won promotion to the first tier Eredivisie for the first time in 1985–86. Beerta is a village and former municipality with a population of 2,205 in the municipality of Oldambt in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. In the 20th century, Beerta was a communist stronghold. In 1933, the municipal council was dismissed by the government, and was ruled by a government commissioner until 1935. Between 1982 and 1990, Beerta was the only municipality with a communist mayor.

Meis received national attention as the leader of the 1969 strikes in Oude Pekela, and the 1970 strike in the Port of Rotterdam.
