Epiphysan

Last updated

Epiphysan is an extract derived from the pineal glands of cattle, historically used by veterinarians for rut suppression in mares and cows. Between 1954 and 1987 it was notoriously used in child research at the villa on Sonnenstrasse which housed the children's psychiatric facility in Innsbruck, Austria. [1]

History

First developed for veterinary medicine, Epiphysan had been tested on humans in Vienna in the 1930s. Prisoners who were given the drug, temporarily exhibited a reduction in their masturbation impulse. [1]

Documented cases

Maria Nowak-Vogl, a psychologist affiliated with the University of Innsbruck, oversaw the Sonnenstrasse villa until her retirement in 1987. [2] Her treatments included the administration of various potent sedatives including Rohypnol. Some children were given Epiphysan to suppress their sexual feelings and discourage masturbation. Nowak-Vogl was the first to administer it to children. According to hundreds of medical records reviewed by Ina Friedmann, a historian of medicine at the University of Innsbruck, nearly thirty cases of Epiphysan being administered were documented.

After the 1980 documentary Problemkinder exposed some of the practices at the villa, Kornelius Kryspin-Exner, its new supervisor, ordered an end to the use of Epiphysan. [3]

No research has been done to study the long term effects of Epiphysan. [1]

Personal lubricants are specialized lubricants used during sexual acts, such as intercourse and masturbation, to reduce friction to or between the penis and vagina, anus or other body parts or applied to sex toys to reduce friction or to ease penetration. Surgical or medical lubricants or gels, which are similar to personal lubricants but not usually referred to or labelled as "personal" lubricants, may be used for medical purposes such as speculum insertion or introduction of a catheter. The primary difference between personal and surgical lubricants is that surgical lubricants are thicker, sterile gels, typically containing a bacteriostatic agent. As of 2015 the personal lubricant market was estimated to be worth at least $400 million.

Among the world's religions, views on masturbation vary widely. Some religions view it as a spiritually detrimental practice, some see it as not spiritually detrimental and others take a situational view. Among these latter religions, some view masturbation as allowable if used as a means towards sexual self-control, or as part of healthy self-exploration, but disallow it if it is done with motives they consider to be wrong, or as an addiction. For example, Christian denominations have different views on masturbation. Today, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox and some Protestant Christians consider masturbation to be a sin. Many Protestant churches in Northern and Western Europe and some Protestant churches in Northern America and in Australia/New Zealand see masturbation as not a sin.

NoFap is a website and community forum that serves as a support group for those who wish to give up pornography and masturbation. Its name comes from the slang term fap, referring to male masturbation. Other reasons for abstinence include religious and moral reasons, self-improvement, and physical beliefs that are not supported by medicine.

On many occasions spanning over a century, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have taught that adherents should not masturbate as part of obedience to the code of conduct known as the law of chastity. This denomination within Mormonism places great emphasis on the sexual behavior of Mormon adherents. Commitment to live the law of chastity is required for baptism, and adherence is required to receive a temple recommend, and is part of the temple endowment ceremony covenants devout participants promise by oath to keep. While serving as church president, Spencer W. Kimball taught that the law of chastity includes "masturbation ... and every hidden and secret sin and all unholy and impure thoughts and practices." Before serving full-time missions, young adults are required to abandon the practice as it is believed to be a gateway sin that dulls sensitivity to the guidance of the Holy Ghost. The first recorded public mention of masturbation by a general church leader to a broad audience was in 1952 by apostle J. Reuben Clark, and recent notable mentions include in 2016, 2019, and 2021.
