Equatorial Palm Oil plc (EPO) [1] is a palm oil company from London, United Kingdom. It is listed on the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange. Equatorial Palm Oil plc was founded in 2005. [2] Effective 20 December 2013, KL-Kepong International Ltd, a wholly owned unit of Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad acquired 63.181% interest in Equatorial Palm Oil PLC. [3] Major brands including Kellogg's, Kraft Foods, Nestlé, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, and General Mills have been reported as direct or indirect consumers of KLK palm oil.

Activity in Liberia

It has a concession in Grand Bassa, Rivercess and Sinoe Counties in Liberia of 169,000 hectares, including 1000 hectares of plantation land in 2010. [4] It holds interests in 34,398 hectares of land at Palm Bay area; 54,550 hectares of land at Butaw area; and 80,000 hectares of land in River Cess County. [2] Hectares of its plantation area in Liberia were set on fire in the course of a land dispute with locals. [5] Some locals have accused the company of not putting people originating in the area into top jobs. [5] Residents have often accused the district’s representative, Hon. Robertson Siawaye and others politicians of plotting against them and siding with the company to take away their land. [5] Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said that they can rest assure that there would be no further expansion by EPO. [6] EPO is accused of involvement in the arbitrary arrest and assault of Liberian community members who claim that they were resisting EPO's efforts to take their land. [7] In September 2013, officers from the EPO security team and the Liberian Police reportedly worked together to assault and beat Jogbahn community members who were peacefully protesting the company's operations. [8]

On 13 January 2021, Equatorial Palm Oil PLC changed its name to Capital Metals PLC. [9] The Company is now engaged in the exploration and development of mineral sands resources in Sri Lanka. [1]

William Allen Vivour was the single most successful 19th-century planter in Africa due to his substantial and flourishing cocoa plantation in Fernando Po. He was the son of a recaptive of Yoruba ancestry captured from what is now present day Lagos Nigeria, and resettled in Sierra Leone by the British West Africa Squadron, and eventually settled in present day Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.

Feronia Inc. is a multinational corporation that produces palm oil and other agricultural products in the Democratic Republic of the Congo while headquartered in Canada. In operation since 1911 as a large-scale commercial farmland and plantation operator in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (“DRC”), the Company used modern agricultural practices to operate and develop its oil palm plantations and arable farming business division. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and was delisted from the TSX Venture Exchange.

Bumitama Agri Ltd is the Singapore holding company of subsidiary Bumitama Gunajaya Agro. Bumitama is an Indonesian oil palm plantation company which cultivates oil palm trees and produces crude palm oil (CPO). It was established in 1996 by the Harita Group with its first acquisition of land in Central Kalimantan. Bumitama owns roughly 230,000 hectares and has planted 187,000 hectares of oil palm trees, primarily in Central and West Kalimantan. Bumitama owns 14 CPO mills, which produce more than 1,000,000 tons of CPO a year. Primary purchasers of their CPO include Wilmar International, the Sinar Mas Group and Musim Mas. In April 2012, Bumitama Agri presented an IPO on the Singapore Stock Exchange. 

Palm oil production in Indonesia

Palm oil production is important to the economy of Indonesia as the country is the world's biggest producer and consumer of the commodity, providing about half of the world's supply. In 2016, Indonesia produced over 34.6 billion tons of palm oil, and exported nearly 73% of it. Oil palm plantations stretch across 12 million hectares, and is projected to reach 13 million by 2020. There are several different types of plantations, including small, privately owned plantations, and larger, state- owned plantations. There are a variety of health, environmental, and societal impacts that result from the production of palm oil in Indonesia. A recent publication by the ONG Rainforest Action Network (RAN) indicates that the use of palm oil by some of the biggest chocolate and snacks' producers is increasing this problem.

PT Asiatic Persada is a palm oil firm from Jambi, Indonesia. It was founded in 1979. Its oil palm plantations spread over an area of approximately 270 square kilometres (100 sq mi). Wilmar International has sold PT Asiatic Persada due to its alleged involvement in land grabs. The forest of Bungku village was cleared for giant palm oil plantations of PT Asiatic Persada in the mid-1980s. In the following years, the company’s bulldozers illegally claimed a further 200 square kilometres (77 sq mi) of rain forest — an area about half the size of Berlin, including areas for which indigenous peoples held guaranteed land rights. Ganda Group, owned by Ganda Sitorus, the younger brother of Martua Sitorus, the co-founder of Wilmar International, bought PT Asiatic Persada in 2013. In the same year, the governor of Jambi urged officials to review PT Asiatic Persada’s license because of violations of the law. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Justice Ministry and the national police chief.

Agriculture in Liberia

Agriculture in Liberia is a major sector of the country's economy worth 38.8% of GDP, employing more than 70% of the population and providing a valuable export for one of the world’s least developed countries. Liberia has a climate favourable to farming, vast forests, and an abundance of water, yet low yields mean that over half of foodstuffs are imported, with net agricultural trade at -$73.12 million in 2010. This was dismissed as a "misconception" by Liberia’s Minister of Agriculture.

PT Adei Plantation and Industry is a palm oil company from Indonesia. It is a subsidiary of Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK).

Alfred Lahai Gbabai Brownell is a Liberian environmental activist and lawyer. Brownell met international attention because of his advocacy to prevent the destruction of tropical forests for palm oil production. After receiving death threats as a result of his work, he and his family fled Liberia in 2016. He won the Goldman Environmental Prize, also called the "Green Nobel," in 2019 for his work protecting more than 500,000 acres (2,000 km2) of the tropical forest that were traditional lands of local communities.

Carson Cumberbatch is one of the largest conglomerates in Sri Lanka which also has business interests in Indonesia, Malaysia, and India. The company has its origin in the colonial era, having founded by merging two companies founded by R. B. Carson and Henry Cumberbatch. The Selvanathan family, founders of the Sri Krishna Corporation, is the ultimate controlling shareholder of the company.
